The Random iTunes Fairy has a nice sense of symmetry. A week after serving up Credence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Proud Mary,’ she has let the needle drop on the band’s classic protest song ‘Run Through the Jungle.’
Given John Fogerty’s opposition to the war in Vietnam, and the song’s title, many listeners believed this track was about the war. Fogerty says it is actually about the proliferation of guns in America.
The reaction to Brad Paisley’s 2013 album Wheelhouse was overwhelmed, probably deservedly so, by commentary on the ill-conceived and downright awful ‘Accidental Racist.’
Unfortunately, quite a few decent songs were overlooked amidst the outrage. Among them was ‘Pressing On a Bruise,’ a track co-written by Paisley and Mat Kearney. Kearney contributes a spoken-word verse toward the end of the song as well.
I’m guessing I’m not alone in having had no idea who Kimbra was until she showed up on a verse of Gotye’s smash hit ‘Somebody That I Used to Know.’
The New Zealand indie pop artist has released two solo albums: Vow in 2011 and The Golden Echo, which dropped this August. Today’s SOTD is a track from the new record.
It’s been awhile since I’ve featured Postmodern Jukebox on the blog. During that time, the band has gone from a clever low-budget project for founder Scott Bradlee to a full-on commercial success with a busy touring schedule and dozens of popular YouTube videos.
The production value of their clips has gone up as well. Check out those nifty monogrammed podiums in front of the horn section.
I listen to a lot of “must hear” songs recommended by websites and magazines, and usually I shrug my shoulders, largely unimpressed.
Every once in awhile, though, I hear something that demands my attention. ‘True Love’ by Vancouver singer-songwriter Tobias Jesso, Jr., is a recent example.
Jesso hasn’t released a full-length album yet, just a couple of demos uploaded to his YouTube channel. The other one, a song to a newborn daughter, is even better than this one.
