Throwback Weekends

In April of 2023, I took the advice of a reader and switched up my weekend posting schedule to a new series I called Throwback Weekends.

Here’s how it works: Each weekend day, I feature the song that topped the Billboard Hot 100 on that day either 40, 50, 60, or 70 years ago (on a rotating basis).

For the first few months, I also included the chart-toppers from 10, 20, and 30 years ago, but I dropped that after realizing that a) the Billboard charts didn’t change much week-to-week in those years, and b) the popular music of the 90s, 00s, and 10s just wasn’t very good.

Two more things. One, Billboard didn’t create the Hot 100 until 1958, but in the mid-50s it published a chart called the Top 100 that similarly aggregated radio play and sales, so that’s what I’m using for this years. And two, when the #1 song from the day in question has already appeared on the blog, I instead post the #2 song (or #3, or lower, if I keep hitting repeats).
