Song of the Day #2,291: ‘Break Free’ – Postmodern Jukebox

postmodern_jukebox_break_freeIt’s been awhile since I’ve featured Postmodern Jukebox on the blog. During that time, the band has gone from a clever low-budget project for founder Scott Bradlee to a full-on commercial success with a busy touring schedule and dozens of popular YouTube videos.

The production value of their clips has gone up as well. Check out those nifty monogrammed podiums in front of the horn section.

For the uninitiated, Postmodern Jukebox re-imagines popular songs in the styles of yesteryear. If you’ve ever wondered what a jazzy ‘All About That Bass’ or a vintage bluegrass ‘Anaconda’ would sound like, they’re your band.

Today’s track is a 70s ‘Tower of Power’ rendition of Ariana Grande’s hit ‘Break Free.’ PMJ even had the good grammatical taste to change “Now that I’ve become who I really are” to “really am” — god bless them.

[Verse 1]
If you want it, take it
I should have said it before
Tried to hide it, fake it
I can’t pretend anymore
[Pre-Chorus]
I only wanna die alive
Never by the hands of a broken heart
I don’t wanna hear you lie tonight
Now that I’ve become who I really are[Chorus x2]
This is the part when I say I don’t want ya
I’m stronger than I’ve been before
This is the part when I break free
Cause I can’t resist it no more

[Verse 2]
You were better, deeper
I was under your spell
Like a deadly fever yeah, babe
On the highway to hell

[Pre-Chorus] + [Chorus x2]

[Bridge]
(No more, baby, oooh)
Thought of your body, I came alive
It was lethal, it was fatal
In my dreams it felt so right
But I woke up every time
Oh baby

[Chorus x2]

The video link is to “Straight Up,” though I thoroughly enjoyed that as well.
