We lost Dolly Parton a month ago, in one of those increasingly rare pop culture moments that transcends divisions and unites us all in gratitude and sorrow.

It’s impossible not to love and admire Dolly Parton, a woman who dedicated her life to making the world a better place.

Just one of the many ways Parton did that was through her music. She released more than 49 solo albums, and dozens of live, collaborative, or soundtrack efforts. It is estimated she wrote more than 3,000 songs in her lifetime.

Despite that incredible volume, I am woefully unfamiliar with Parton’s musical output. I can name six Dolly Parton songs off the top of my head — probably the same six any casual fan would rattle off.

To remedy that, and to honor the legacy of a bona fide legend, I’m giving Dolly the Shallow Dive treatment over the next few weeks. I’ve selected 15 albums from across her 56-year recording career and will feature a song from each.

To keep it simple, I’ll cover every Parton album that achieved Gold or Platinum status in the U.S., plus a few other notable releases to make sure I’ve represented every decade in which she released a studio album.

I’ll start things off, appropriately, at the beginning. Parton’s debut studio album, Hello, I’m Dolly, was released in September of 1967. It featured a dozen modest country tunes, all but two written or co-written by the 21-year-old chanteuse.

Her label, Monument, had hoped to promote her as a pop singer, but how could the fourth of 12 children, born in a one-room cabin into a Tennessee sharecropping family, perform anything other than country?

Hello, I’m Dolly is a delightful listen, with each of its songs clocking in around two and a half minutes and delivering a perfect dose of sweetness, sadness, humor, or sass before jumping to the next.

The album’s first single, ‘Dumb Blonde,’ was one of the two songs not written by Dolly. It made it to #24 on the Country chart. Even more successful was ‘Something Fishy,’ a Parton original that peaked at #17.

The rest of the album is just as delightful as its best-known tracks, and if you want a short, sweet sample of Dolly’s winning personality, formidable songwriting chops, and delightful vocals, this is a great place to start.
