Song of the Day #2,121: ‘Washington Square’ – Counting Crows

crows_saturday_nightsIt’s been more than six years since Counting Crows’ last album, Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings, the double-disc disappointment on which today’s SOTD appears.

I’m not counting the 2012 release Underwater Sunshine, a collection of covers, because, well, it’s a collection of covers.

Five albums in 21 years? That doesn’t seem right. I do see, on Wikipedia, that the band has been in the studio recording their next release so maybe we’ll see something from them in 2014.

Song of the Day #2,115: ‘Stuck Like Glue’ – Sugarland

sugarland2I was really into Sugarland for the span of one album.

That record was 2008’s Love On the Inside, and it remains a solid and entertaining effort from start to finish.

But the band’s follow-up record, The Incredible Machine, was a bit of a train wreck. And as far as I know, that was the last time anybody heard from them.

Song of the Day #2,108: ‘Kate’ – Ben Folds Five

whateverOn a film podcast I listed to recently, the hosts discussed Sight & Sound‘s decision to no longer let critics combine The Godfather and The Godfather Part Two into one entry when submitting their “ten best films of all time” lists.

It’s no doubt the correct decision. It’s patently unfair to let two masterpieces join forces in facing off against individual films. But they tell such a potent and tragic tale together that you kind of want to bend the rules and just go with it.

Song of the Day #2,107: ‘Sugar Moon’ – k.d. lang

kd_lang_shadowlandk.d. lang is one of those performers who elevates any material she works on. Her voice is reason enough to listen, no matter the song.

My favorite album of hers remains Absolute Torch and Twang, lang’s wonderfully titled 1989 release. As the title suggests, that record is a perfect blend of her country and crooner sides.
