Song of the Day #2,101: ‘Papa Jack’ – Morrissey

morrissey_maladjustedWell, I guess the Random iTunes Fairy is on a Smiths kick, or at least a Morrissey kick. ‘Papa Jack’ is a cut from the mopey crooner’s 1997 solo album Maladjusted.

This song appeared on only the early releases of that album, making it a bit of a collector’s item. Perhaps I’ll sell my copy one day and retire on the proceeds, as I might have done with my childhood Star Wars toys had my mother not given them away to a neighbor’s kid. (Just checking to see if you’re reading, mom!)

Song of the Day #2,101: ‘London’ – The Smiths

louderthanbombsI know there aren’t a lot of Smiths fans in these parts (at least not among my frequent commenters) so I’m sure today’s Random Weekend selection will go unappreciated.

Song of the Day #2,095: ‘Pearls’ – Sade

sadeThis is the first Sade song ever featured on this blog. I guess that’s not a major surprise, but between Random Weekends and mining my own collection, I figured I would have settled on one of her tracks by now.

I’m not a big Sade fan, though I do love her voice. Her genre is just one of the few that I have never gotten into. Smooth jazz R&B is great in the background but that’s about it.

Song of the Day #2,094: ‘Flashbulb Eyes’ – Arcade Fire

arcade_fire_reflektorHere is one of the sillier songs from Arcade Fire’s 2013 album, Reflektor, which as a whole is a pretty silly record.

This song is pretty basic (there are only about 25 words in the whole thing) and it contains the same theme as much of the band’s recent work — the dehumanization of technology. When we all live on and in front of screens, what does that say about humanity?

Song of the Day #2,088: ‘Breathe’ – U2

nolineonA few days ago I described U2’s last studio album, No Line On the Horizon, as “underwhelming.” Apparently the Random iTunes Fairy took offense to that and served up today’s song as a rebuttal.

Indeed, ‘Breathe’ is one of the best songs on No Line On the Horizon, bursting with an energy and spirit the album otherwise lacks.
