#13. ‘Other Plans’

The last song written for the album, and an exercise by Bridgers in writing a melody containing only one note. It’s a successful enough experiment that my tin-eared self didn’t catch that limitation until I read about it.

#12. ‘Lost Weekend’

Culled from a much longer recording, the vocal for this stream-of-conscious confessional was pulled from a voice memo Bridgers recorded on her phone. Here, she touches on one of the album’s other major themes, her split from fiancée Paul Mescal and new relationship with Bo Burnham. “I’m supposed to be married, but I called it off,” she sings mournfully.

#11. ‘Lost Weekend (Reprise)’

The album’s last song is a reprise of its title track, this time focused on her father’s death: “He’s not coming back, but I still live by the things he taught me.” This version of the song is more hopeful than the previous one, ending the album on a note of acceptance and grace.

#10. ‘The Outside’

The opening track launches Lost Highway in unexpected fashion, finding Bridgers singing through a vocoder as she describes the scene at her father’s funeral. The vocal treatment places us in her dissociated headspace as she watches herself mourning.
