A month or so back, I did a two-week Phoebe Bridgers Deep Dive to prepare for the release of her new album, Lost Weekend. Now that album has arrived, and it’s her first release that I received as a bona fide fan.

This week I’ll rank the tracks on Lost Weekend according to my preference and process the album as a whole while I’m at it.

#16. ‘Lost Parade’

Lost Weekend is a real album album, one that intends to take the listener on a journey rather than just offer up a selection of songs. As such, it has a few tracks that serve as interludes or connective tissue. That’s the case with this 1-minute instrumental, which uses the melody from ‘Graceland Too’ on Bridgers’ last album, Punisher, as part of a soothing soundscape that provides a bridge to the record’s final three songs.

#15. ‘Never Going Back!’

Another interlude. This one finds Bridgers repeating the phrase “Never going back again, the way it used to be is not the way that it is” in a joyous, revival-style singalong. The music fades and segues into a voicemail recording from Bridgers’ late father, Tony, who died in 2022. Much of Lost Weekend centers on Tony’s death, and the complicated relationship Phoebe had with her father.

#14. ‘Panorama’

This interlude has a little more meat on its bones both musically and lyrically than the last two. A couple of minutes of ambient music leads to the single verse, which finds Bridgers alone in a hotel room with a mysterious stranger at the door (she has said in interviews that the unwanted guest is Death). Coming in the tracklist right before a song explicitly about her father’s passing, I believe this one is about the moment she found out.
