Here’s a great song written by Laura Nyro and featured on her classic album Eli and the Thirteenth Confession but turned into a hit by 5th Dimension.

Nyro wrote a ton of songs that became hits for other people but never received the acclaim she deserved as a performer in her own right. I own only this one album and it’s a knockout.

Song of the Day #3,200: ‘Girls On My Mind’ – David Byrne

One of the down sides of being a music fan who constantly seeks out new artists and albums is that you’re leaving other artists and albums behind along the way.

Twenty-five years ago, I listened to a shit ton of David Byrne and Talking Heads. The 1992 album, Uh-Oh, on which today’s Random SOTD appears, was in constant rotation. But I’ve probably listened to in only once or twice in the two-plus decades since.

Song of the Day #3,199: ‘Bounce Back’ – Big Sean

My final song of the latest ‘What the Kids are Listening To’ segment comes from Big Sean, whose ‘Bounce Back’ sits at #11 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

My 14-year-old daughter Sophia has been singing the praises of Big Sean recently, even asking to attend a general admission concert of his on a school night in Miami (um, that was a no). I’m a little nervous to hit play on this one, especially after wondering just yesterday what effect some of these songs might have on teenagers.

Song of the Day #3,197: ‘Paris’ – The Chainsmokers

Yesterday I bemoaned the sameness of every Chainsmokers song I’ve heard and called on the EDM duo to try something different. Well, one day later, here’s their chance.

The Chainsmokers’ tune ‘Paris’ sits at #9 on this week’s charts, giving them their fifth top ten hit in the past year. These guys are really on a roll.
