Song of the Day #2,216: ‘Allergies’ – Paul Simon

hearts_and_bonesToday’s Random Weekend selection is the opening track from Paul Simon’s 1983 album Hearts and Bones. This was Simon’s first record in eight years following the release of Still Crazy After All These Years.

Fans who had been waiting with bated breath for new music from Simon must have been scratching their heads when the first song they heard was this bizarre track. Could a lyrical genius like Simon really be singing lines like “Where do allergies go when it’s after a show and they want to get something to eat?”

Song of the Day #2,210: ‘Supernatural Superserious’ – R.E.M.

rem_accelerateAs years have passed, I’ve increasingly looked at R.E.M. as a band that broke up in 1997, with Bill Berry’s departure. The band put out ten albums before that point and five after, but those five never quite felt like “real” R.E.M. albums.

Song of the Day #2,209: ‘God Put a Smile Upon Your Face’ – Coldplay

Song of the Day #2,203: ‘Say It Right’ – Nelly Furtado

nelly_furtado_looseI managed to post 2,194 Song of the Day posts without once featuring a Nelly Furtado song, and now I’m posting my second in a week.

One of the hardest concepts for me to wrap my mind around is the idea of true randomness. Every time I’m in my car and randomly hear three Beatles songs back-to-back-to-back, I figure something must be wrong with the stereo system.

Song of the Day #2,202: ‘Dickhead’ – Kate Nash

kate_nash_made_of_bricksI bought Kate Nash’s Made of Bricks in 2007 when it was riding a wave of critical hype. I listened to it once, was thoroughly unimpressed, then shelved it, never to hear it again.

Until today, when the charmingly titled ‘Dickhead’ popped up as today’s Random iTunes selection.

Have the ensuing seven years changed my mind about the merits of Ms. Nash?
