I love the swinging Frank Sinatra of ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ and ‘Come Fly With Me’ but my true affection for Ol’ Blue Eyes lies with the depressing records.

Song of the Day #2,425: ‘Scare Easy’ – Mudcrutch

mudThe random music selector in my car has been on a Tom Petty kick lately. Lots of tracks from Wildflowers, Damn the Torpedoes, Hypnotic Eye, even Traveling Wilburys.

No matter what Petty song it serves up, I’m never tempted to hit the skip button. There’s just something about his music — or at least the music of his that I own — that makes it perfect for any situation.

Song of the Day #2,424: ‘Fifty Dollar Love Affair’ – Joe Jackson

joe_jackson_big_worldJoe Jackson’s Big World is an album I want to know much better than I do.

Released in 1986, it’s an album of original material that was recorded and mixed live with no added overdubs or post-production. The audience was asked not to applaud during or immediately after the performances. Stew used a similar tactic on his great album, The Naked Dutch Painter and Other Songs.

Song of the Day #2,418: ‘Love Will Find a Way’ – Lionel Richie

lionel_richieI recently bought Lionel Richie’s Can’t Stop Now on an impulse after getting ‘Stuck On You’ stuck in my head one afternoon.

It’s a great album. Six of its eight tracks were major hits. Today’s SOTD is one of the two that weren’t, but it too is a silky piece of soulful pop balladry.
