Song of the Day #6,509: ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ – Carl Perkins

Throwing back to the week of May 2, 1956, we find Elvis Presley holding on to the top spot with ‘Heartbreak Hotel‘ with Perry Como’s ‘Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom)‘ and Les Baxter’s ‘The Poor People of Paris‘ in the second and third spots.

At #4 was a song many associate with Presley but one that was written and recorded by Carl Perkins first: ‘Blue Suede Shoes.’ Presley’s version was recorded around the same time as Perkins’ but wasn’t released as a single until later in 1956 out of respect for the original (at the time, it was very common for multiple versions of a song to be released simultaneously).

Johnny Cash claimed that he gave Perkins the idea for this song when he told him about an airman he served with in Germany who referred to his uniform shoes as “blue suede shoes.’

But Perkins told NPR’s Terry Gross in a 1996 interview that he was inspired by the sight of a man in the audience of a honkytonk show who was concerned about people stepping on his blue suedes. Perkins said he couldn’t believe the guy seemed to care more about his shoes than the gorgeous girl dancing with him.

Either way, he delivered an iconic track and the biggest hit of his career. In fact, Perkins’ version eventually made it to #2 while Elvis’ stalled out in the 20s. So at least with this song, The King ceded the crown to Carl Perkins.

[Verse 1]
Well, it’s one for the money
Two for the show
Three to get ready
Now go, cat, go
But don’t you step on my blue suede shoes
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes

[Verse 2]
Well, you can knock me down
Step in my face
Slander my name
All over the place
Do anything that you want to do, but uh-uh
Honey, lay off of my shoes
Don’t you step on my blue suede shoes
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes

[Verse 3]
You can burn my house
Steal my car
Drink my liquor
From an old fruit jar
Do anything that you want to do
But uh-uh honey, lay off of my shoes
Don’t you step on my blue suede shoes
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes

[Verse 1]
Well, it’s one for the money
Two for the show
Three to get ready
Now go, cat, go
But don’t you step on my blue suede shoes
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes

[Outro]
Well it’s
Blue, blue, blue suede shoes
Blue, blue, blue suede shoes, yeah
Blue, blue, blue suede shoes baby
Blue, blue, blue suede shoes
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes
