I usually choose my Deep Dive subjects because I’m curious about careers I’ve experienced at only a superficial level.
This one came about for a much sadder reason: Sinéad O’Connor’s death in 2023 at just 56 years old due to respiratory complications. It was a tragic end for an uncompromising artist.
O’Connor’s career went from massive success to relative obscurity (in the wrong order) and was filled with controversies both earned and unearned. In some cases, she was proven right years after being publicly shamed for a taking a daring stance.
Whatever the outside forces, O’Connor’s fierce talent shone through all of her ten studio albums. Her voice was uniquely beautiful, her songwriting uniquely challenging and evocative.
She will be missed.
