Like every college kid in the late 80s and early 90s, I owned a CD copy of Legend, the Diamond-selling greatest hits collection by Bob Marley and the Wailers. And like all of those college kids, I loved every one of its classic tracks.
But that was the extent of my Bob Marley knowledge. I had never listened to, let alone owned, a single one of the 13 studio albums he released during his too-brief career.
This Deep Dive remedied that, giving me a chance to immerse myself in every one of those recordings: from his early teenage fumbling through the complicated takes on social justice, spirituality, and sex in his later work.
This journey also served as an illuminating history lesson about the socio-political climate of Jamaica and Marley’s important role in its development.
