Legendary rockers The Rolling Stones were the first band I gave the Deep Dive treatment. I’ve always been a fan of The Stones, and especially of their iconic four-album run in the late 60s and early 70s.
I got to cover that peerless stretch here, but also their modest blues band beginnings, their face-off with The Beatles in the 60s, their lineup changes of the 70s, commercial peak in the early 80s, and internal turmoil in the mid 80s.
Oh, and that still leaves 40 years, during which they were a lot less productive but still at least occasionally brilliant. And they are at it still, octogenarians who released a new album in the summer of 2026.
The Rolling Stones have had one of the greatest runs in popular music history, and I won’t be surprised if I have to keep adding to this Deep Dive until they’re well into their 90s.
