Song of the Day #2,338: ‘Jealous’ – Nick Jonas

nick_jonas_jealousI have a vague recollection of the Jonas Brothers being a thing several years back, but I couldn’t tell you how many years back, or what sort of a thing they actually were.

Obviously they were one more incarnation of the boy band craze — another New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys or One Direction. But I couldn’t name a single song or controversy tied to them (there had to be a controversy, right? Isn’t there always?).

Song of the Day #2,337: ‘Lips Are Movin’ – Meghan Trainor

meghan_trainor_lips_are_movinHolding the #8 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 is Meghan Trainor with ‘Lips are Movin.’ It was her call to leave off the ‘G.’

This gives Trainor two songs in the top eight, quite the accomplishment for a woman who was completely unknown at this time last year.

Now she’s one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Wonder if that will still be true a year from now.

Song of the Day #2,336: ‘I’m Not the Only One’ – Sam Smith

sam_smithTaylor Swift sits at the #6 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with the juggernaut that is ‘Shake It Off.’ It’s upsetting that a song this bad is Swift’s biggest hit.

At #7 is Sam Smith with ‘I’m Not the Only One.’ Smith had a big 2014, his ‘Stay With Me‘ dominating the charts for weeks.

bruno_mars_uptown_funkWith just 16 days left in 2014, it’s time for me shift into year-end mode. So here’s how the next few weeks on the blog will go.

This week and next I’ll feature my final look at the Billboard charts for 2014. The week of New Year’s Eve, my family and I will be out of town so I’ll put the blog in vacation mode (with some nice tracks to fill the time, I hope). Then I’ll come back in the first week of 2015 and count down my top 20 songs of the year.

Sound good? Great!

Song of the Day #2,334: ‘Eternal Life’ – Jeff Buckley

buckleyHere’s a “great” album that I never listen to.

Jeff Buckley’s Grace, a brilliant debut to be sure, took on iconic status when he drowned a few years after its release. Its mix of soaring vocals, acrobatic guitar work and ambitious song structures heralded a fierce talent who would sadly never get to reach his potential.
