Song of the Day #3,579: ‘Happy Now?’ – No Doubt

This is the fifth track I’ve featured from No Doubt’s 1995 album Tragic Kingdom, and the third on a Random Weekend. I wish I’d been keeping stats from the start, so I’d know if this is one of the most-represented Random Weekend albums or somewhere in the middle of the pack.

‘Happy Now?’ was written by Gwen Stefani about her breakup from band member Tony Kanal, with whom she had a 7-year relationship. How odd it must have been for both of them to perform this song (and others with a similar theme) night after night.

Song of the Day #2,480: ‘Sunday Morning’ – No Doubt

no_doubtNo Doubt was one of the great 90s bands, and their Tragic Kingdom one of the great 90s albums.

I didn’t really follow the group much past this record, but it’s impressive to see Gwen Stefani looking even more gorgeous two decades later. Honestly, it’s hard to differentiate the woman in this 1995 video from the woman who coached on the last season of The Voice.

Song of the Day #1,997: ‘The Climb’ – No Doubt

no_doubtI have a vivid memory of listening to No Doubt’s breakout album, Tragic Kingdom, during my hour-plus commute to one of my first jobs out of college.

I listened to it quite a bit back then. I don’t think I’ve listened to it in its entirety since.

Best 90s Artists – #7 – No Doubt

No Doubt is one of two bands on this list that feature lead singers who went on to solo fame in future decades. Gwen Stefani has enjoyed great success as both a performer and a fashion icon in the past decade. My daughters were just perusing her fashion line at Target.

But the Gwen Stefani of the 90s was a punk princess whose athletic front-woman posturing made No Doubt one of the most refreshing acts of the decade.

Song of the Day #295: ‘Don’t Speak’ – No Doubt

no_doubtIt’s hard to believe it’s been 14 years since No Doubt first blasted onto the charts with their great album Tragic Kingdom, propelled by the singles ‘Just a Girl’ and especially today’s Song of the Day, ‘Don’t Speak.’

Even harder to believe is that the band actually formed nearly a decade before that release and made a living solely on their energetic live shows while hoping to be signed by a label. Yes, it was 23 years ago that a 17-year-old Gwen Stefani first picked up a microphone and embarked on a career that continues to evolve in surprising ways.
