Song of the Day #2,507: ‘Hey Mama’ – David Guetta feat. Nicki Minaj & Afrojack

david_guetta_nicki_minajIn Billboard’s ninth spot is Ed Sheeran with ‘Thinking Out Loud,’ the only ballad in the top ten. Good song.

Rounding out the top ten is David Guetta with ‘Hey Mama,’ featuring Nicki Minaj. This is basically a Nicki Minaj song in the same way ‘Uptown Funk’ is a Bruno Mars song, but the DJs get top billing because the songs appear on their albums. It’s all about the singles these days, anyway.

Song of the Day #2,506: ‘Nasty Freestyle’ – T-Wayne

t-wayne_nasty_freestyleIn the seventh spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 this week is Maroon 5 with ‘Sugar,’ the throwback pop song that’s as ubiquitous as the band’s last few hits. At this point, Maroon 5 is one of the most successful acts of the modern era. Not sure anybody would have predicted that in the lean years following their first album.

Song of the Day #2,505: ‘Want to Want Me’ – Jason Derulo

derulo_want_to_want_meIn Billboard’s fifth spot is Mark Ronson (and Bruno Mars) with ‘Uptown Funk,’ the smash hit that keeps on giving.

walk_the_moonThough we had a newcomer at the top spot of Billboard’s Hot 100, the second and third slots are repeats.

Fetty Wap’s ‘Trap Queen‘ sits at #2 while The Weeknd’s ‘Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)‘ comes in at #3.

That brings us to #4 and Ohio-based alternative band WALK THE MOON, whose ‘Shut Up and Dance’ is making a chart splash a full nine months after its initial single release.

Song of the Day #2,503: ‘See You Again’ – Wiz Khalifa feat. Charlie Puth

walker_diesel_furiousIt’s been a couple of months since I took a look at Billboard’s Hot 100. I’ll spend the next two weeks catching up, and finding out how many new songs have cracked the charts during that time.

In the #1 spot is Wiz Khalifa with ‘See You Again,’ a song he recorded for the Furious 7 soundtrack. The song is ok, but its connection to Paul Walker’s death gives it added emotional depth.
