Song of the Day #2,512: ‘G.D.F.R.’ – Flo Rida feat. Sage The Gemini & Lookas

gdfrIn the 13th spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 this week is this collection of random letters: ‘G.D.F.R.’ by Flo Rida, featuring Sage the Gemini and Lookas.

The title, based on the illuminating lyrics below, stands for “going down for real.” Sage the Gemini and Flo Rida trade verses, but I see no mention of Lookas, not do I know what a Lookas is.

Indeed, Lookas appears to be the one working musical artist without a Wikipedia entry. I did find a Soundcloud page full of tracks he remixed, and apparently one of his remixed samples appears on this song, hence the credit.

Song of the Day #2,511: ‘Talking Body’ – Tove Lo

tove_loAt #12 on Billboard’s Hot 100 is Tove Lo’s ‘Talking Body.’

My wife recently leads a new car and got the requisite three free months of Sirius/XM service. On family trips, we cycle through a series of stations, with my wife and I favoring the ’80s on 8′ and our daughters pushing for ‘Hits 1.’

Song of the Day #2,510: ‘Honey, I’m Good’ – Andy Grammer

andy_grammerContinuing my coverage of the current Billboard Hot 100, I arrive at #11 and an entry from Andy Grammer, a name that’s new to me.

The picture on the right suggests a frat-guy Harry Connick Jr. vibe and Wikipedia describes his genre as pop rock and blue-eyed soul.

The lyrics to this track are cute, depicting the singer’s refusal to let temptation get the better of him when confronted by an attractive woman at a bar. Nice to see a song celebrating monogamy, even while acknowledging that the woman he’s refusing has “got that ass.”

Song of the Day #2,509: ‘Ring Them Bells’ – Sufjan Stevens

im_not_thereFrequent readers of this blog, especially those who know me offline, know that I’m as big a movie and TV fan as I am a music fan. Probably even more so.

Back in 2008, I started what I described then as “an occasional series” on Forgotten Gems, favorite movies of mine that never earned a spot in the popular consciousness as great films.

Song of the Day #2,508: ‘Pantry (Acoustic Version)’ – Lyle Lovett

naturalforcesEvery several months a Lyle Lovett song pops up on Random Weekends, and every several months I bemoan the fact that the man hasn’t put out an album worthy of his talents in nearly two decades.

The Road to Ensenada, Lovett’s best album, came out in 1996. In the 19 years since, he’s put out five studio albums, three of which consisted mostly of covers. The other two were pale imitations of the great albums he released during the first decade of his career.
