Song of the Day #2,653: ‘Locked Away’ – R. City Featuring Adam Levine

r_city_locked_awayHolding strong at #7 is The Weeknd with ‘Can’t Feel My Face,’ an undeniable hit and his second appearance in the top ten this week.

In the eighth spot is a new name for me, R. City. That’s the abbreviated name of a duo called Rock City made up of brothers Theron and Timothy Thomas, who hail from St.Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

This track, with a chorus sung by the newly-bald Adam Levine, is about families torn apart by incarceration, and was inspired by the Thomas brothers’ own experiences when their father was imprisoned for several years during their childhood.

The video features several vignettes, including a soldier leaving his wife and daughter to go to war, a man returning home (from prison, presumably) to his family, a father seeing his daughter arrested and a couple with financial problems fighting over the man’s decision to engage in criminal activity. Theron and Timothy play two of the roles.

Good song, good message. Glad to see it doing well.

[Chorus: Adam Levine]
If I got locked away
And we lost it all today
Tell me honestly, would you still love me the same?
If I showed you my flaws
If I couldn’t be strong
Tell me honestly, would you still love me the same?

[Verse 1: R. City]
Right about now
If a judge ‘for life’ me, would ya stay by my side?
Or is you gonna say goodbye?
Can you tell me right now?
If I couldn’t buy you the fancy things in life
Shawty, would it be alright?
Come on show me that you are down

[Pre-Chorus: R. City]
Now tell me would you really ride for me?
Baby tell me would you die for me?
Would you spend your whole life with me?
Would you be there to always hold me down?
Tell me would you really cry for me?
Baby don’t lie to me
If I didn’t have anything
I wanna know, would you stick around?

[Chorus: Adam Levine]
If I got locked away
And we lost it all today
Tell me honestly, would you still love me the same?
If I showed you my flaws
If I couldn’t be strong
Tell me honestly, would you still love me the same?

[Verse 2: R. City]
Skilidi dong dong dong dang
All I want is somebody real, who don’t need much
A gal I know that I can trust
To be here when money low
If I did not have nothing else to give but love
Would that even be enough?
Gyal me need fi know

[Pre-Chorus: R. City]
Now tell me would you really ride for me?
Baby tell me would you die for me?
Would you spend your whole life with me?
Would you be there to always hold me down?
Tell me would you really cry for me?
Baby don’t lie to me
If I didn’t have anything
I wanna know, would you stick around?

[Chorus: Adam Levine]
If I got locked away
And we lost it all today
Tell me honestly, would you still love me the same?
If I showed you my flaws
If I couldn’t be strong
Tell me honestly, would you still love me the same?

[Bridge: R. City]
Tell me, tell me, would you want me?
Tell me, tell me, would you call me?
If you knew I wasn’t balling
Cause I need a gyal who’s always by my side
Tell me, tell me, do you need me?
Tell me, tell me, do you love me?
Or is you just tryna play me?
Cause I need a gyal to hold me down for life

[Chorus: Adam Levine]
If I got locked away
And we lost it all today
Tell me honestly would you still love me the same?
If I showed you my flaws
If I couldn’t be strong
Tell me honestly would you still love me the same?
If I got locked away
And we lost it all today
Tell me honestly would you still love me the same?
If I showed you my flaws
If I couldn’t be strong
Tell me honestly would you still love me the same?

I’ve heard this song many times on the radio, but never paid much attention to the lyrics, nor had I seen the video, so I didn’t pick up on the prison theme. I just thought it was a love song.

Anyway, it seems like almost anything Levine touches nowadays turns to gold (records). Not sure how he hooked up with these guys, perhaps a record company pairing, but it’s quite the lucky break for them.
