Song of the Day #2,652: ‘Wildest Dreams’ – Taylor Swift

taylor_swift_wildest_dreamsIn Billboard’s fourth and fifth spots are a couple of repeats — one I like and one I loathe. At #4 is Fetty Wap with the horrible ‘679‘ and rounding out the top five is Shawn Mendes with the respectable ‘Stitches.’

Taylor Swift’s dominance continues as yet another 1989 single hits the top ten. ‘Wildest Dreams’ is the fifth 1989 track to reach the top ten, making this one of only 21 albums in history to have that many songs on the chart. And the album is sure to generate at least one more hit, if not several.

‘Wildest Dreams’ find Swift either impersonating or paying homage to Lana Del Rey with good results. I wasn’t blown away with this song after my initial listen but it has grown on me quite a bit.

The video received some criticism for glamorizing a white-washed, colonial vision of Africa and not finding room for a single person of color. That feels like a reach at a time when there are plenty of real examples of racism or racial insensitivity from which to choose.

However, I will say that Swift’s choice of leading men in all of her videos is amusing. It’s one anvil-jawed vapid hunk after another. I don’t care that they’re white, I just wonder why they all look like comic book characters.

[Verse 1]
He said, “Let’s get out of this town
Drive out of this city, away from the crowds”
I thought, heaven can’t help me now
Nothing lasts forever
But this is gonna take me down

[Pre-Chorus 1]
He’s so tall and handsome as hell
He’s so bad, but he does it so well
I can see the end as it begins
My one condition is

[Chorus]
Say you’ll remember me
Standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset, babe
Red lips and rosy cheeks, say you’ll see me again
Even if it’s just in your
Wildest dreams, ah-aah ha
Wildest dreams, ah-aah ha

[Verse 2]
I said, “No one has to know what we do”
His hands are in my hair, his clothes are in my room
And his voice is a familiar sound, nothing lasts forever
But this is getting good now

[Pre-Chorus 2]
He’s so tall and handsome as hell
He’s so bad, but he does it so well
And when we’ve had our very last kiss
My last request is

[Chorus]
Say you’ll remember me
Standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset, babe
Red lips and rosy cheeks, say you’ll see me again
Even if it’s just in your
Wildest dreams, ah-aah ha
Wildest dreams, ah-aah ha

[Bridge] (x2)
You see me in hindsight
Tangled up with you all night
Burning it down
Someday when you leave me
I bet these memories
Follow you around

[Chorus – Variation]
Say you’ll remember me
Standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset, babe
Red lips and rosy cheeks, say you’ll see me again
Even if it’s just pretend

[Chorus]
Say you’ll remember me
Standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset, babe
Red lips and rosy cheeks, say you’ll see me again
Even if it’s just in your
Wildest dreams, ah-aah ha
Wildest dreams, ah-aah ha

Swift and this album remain juggernauts to be sure. I don’t find this song as compelling, or addictive, as other singles that have been released.

As for the criticism of the video, it’s just absurd. Clearly, she is is depicting a 40s style movie and is looking at Africa, and the Hollywood stars who were featured in those types of movies during that era, through the lens of the time. Frankly, it seems that nearly everything Swift does is destined to be criticized, to the point that it is the critics, not Swift, who lose all credibility or sense of reason. Maybe that is inevitable given Swift’s huge success and popularity, but I can’t help but think there is some degree of sexism at play as well. I simply don’t see equivalent male stars being put under the same microscope and barrage of criticism.

While it is hard to feel bad for someone as successful as Swift, dealing with such constant scrutiny must be exhausting, and unnecessarily so.

I do think the criticism for this video is misplaced. I mean she leaves her own premier because the guy she likes couldn’t be with her? That seems like a step backward to me. :/
