First of all, Merry Christmas everybody!
I was hoping fate would arrange for a song appropriate for the holiday to land in this position, but alas, we are left with ‘Tuesday’ by rapper I Love Makonnen, a song about a hard-partying drug dealer.
Santa would be proud.
In Billboard’s 15th slot is ‘The Hanging Tree,’ performed by none other than actress Jennifer Lawrence, who can seemingly do no wrong.
Lawrence had to be coaxed into singing the song for a scene in the film, having very little confidence in her voice. I’m sure she never dreamed of landing this high on the Billboard charts.
Beyoncé sits at #13 with ‘7/11,’ a mediocre song that sounds like a masterpiece compared to the track at #14, Big Sean’s ‘I Don’t Fuck With You.’
This song is sort of the imbecile’s version of Cee Lo Green’s ‘Fuck You,’ lacking that song’s wit, charm and musical qualities.
In Billboard’s 11th spot is Tove Lo with ‘Habits (Stay High),’ a good song that has had a nice run on this chart.
At #12 is Selena Gomez with ‘The Heart Wants What It Wants,’ a song I’m guessing was not inspired by Woody Allen’s use of that phrase.
I thought Gomez was still in rehab or recovery or something, so I’m surprised to see her with new music on the charts.
I’ve listened to Sheryl Crow’s 2008 album once, and that was enough for me to decide I never needed to hear it again.
That’s probably unfair to Ms. Crow, who is a talented songwriter and performer, but I just don’t have the time or desire to dig too deeply into new music that doesn’t grab me right away.
