A year after the release of her surprise self-titled album, Beyoncé has dropped a Platinum follow-up edition that adds a few extra tracks and videos.
It feels more like a holiday season cash-grab than an extension of the very personal and artistic statement she made with the first record.
But when the brazen commercial ploy results in the release of this video, for new track ‘7/11,’ who am I to complain?
This song, a club stomper that was probably written and recorded in all of 45 minutes, is instantly forgettable. But the video is a blast.
Seemingly recorded on an iPhone during an all-day party at Beyoncé’s house, it’s a perfect encapsulation of the modern “everybody has a video camera in their pocket” era.
It even prompted a lengthy essay on Slate asking if this video signals the future of digital cinema.
I don’t know about that. But I know I’ve watched it many, many times.
