Song of the Day #2,342: ‘The Heart Wants What It Wants’ – Selena Gomez

selena_gomezIn Billboard’s 11th spot is Tove Lo with ‘Habits (Stay High),’ a good song that has had a nice run on this chart.

At #12 is Selena Gomez with ‘The Heart Wants What It Wants,’ a song I’m guessing was not inspired by Woody Allen’s use of that phrase.

I thought Gomez was still in rehab or recovery or something, so I’m surprised to see her with new music on the charts.

This song (and its cheesy video intro) appears to be about a betrayal by Justin Bieber, which is rather pathetic. I like Gomez, but I have to question her life and song choices.

[Intro]
What the heart wants
What the heart wants
What the heart wants

[Verse 1]
You got me sipping on something
I can’t compare to nothing I’ve ever known
I’m hoping that after this fever I’ll survive
I know I’m acting a bit crazy
Strung out, a little bit hazy
Hand over heart, I’m praying
That I’m gonna make it out alive

[Pre-Chorus]
The bed’s getting cold and you’re not here
The future that we hold is so unclear
But I’m not alive until you call
And I’ll bet the odds against it all
Save your advice cause I won’t hear
You might be right, but I don’t care
There’s a million reasons
Why I should give you up

[Chorus]
But the heart wants what it wa-a-a-a-a-nts
The heart wants what it wa-a-a-a-a-nts

[Verse 2]
You got me scattered in pieces
Shining like stars and screaming
Lighting me up like Venus
But then you disappear and make me wait
And every second’s like torture
Heroin drip, no more so
Finding a way to let go
Baby, baby, no I can’t escape

[Pre-Chorus]

[Chorus – Extended]
But the heart wants what it wa-a-a-a-a-nts
The heart wants what it wa-a-a-a-a-nts
The heart wants what it wa-a-a-a-a-nts
The heart wants what it wa-a-a-a-a-nts

[Bridge]
This is a modern
Fairytale
No happy endings
No wind in our sails
But I can’t imagine
A life without
Breathless moments
Breaking me down, down, down, down

[Pre-Chorus]

[Chorus – Extended]

[Outro]
The heart wants what it wants, baby
The heart wants what it wants, baby
It wants what it wants
It wants what it wants

I just heard this song for the first time last night on the Hits One countdown. Pretty generic pop song, but I also like Gomez and hope she stays clean and free of the likes of the Biebs.

Selena Gomez performed this song at the AMAs and did an absolutely beautiful job with it. I think that there are more songs these days that have so much stuff and remixes and the dropping of the basses that to find a song so simple and pure is great. This song really focuses on the pain of the voice and lets you listen to the lyrics. I really don’t think it’s important that it sounds like another pop song or anything like that since true lyrical value translates through all genres. I am very impressed with Selena Gomez on this one who has come a long way since the Wizards of Waverly Place theme song.
