Song of the Day #4,356: ‘Gold in Them Hills (Remix)’ – Ron Sexsmith w/ Chris Martin

We have another chance for the Random iTunes Fairy to match a song to a milestone. Today is frequent commenter Dana’s birthday — Happy Birthday, Dana! — so he will have the chance to comment on a song chosen (randomly) just for him.

Let’s spin the dial…

Well, this is a rather funny outcome. This is a remixed version of a cut on Ron Sexsmith’s sixth studio album, 2002’s Cobblestone Runway. And I happen to have featured the original version already, so we have Dana’s first reaction on record.

This remix features Chris Martin on vocals along with Sexsmith, a fact I mentioned on that earlier post. And here was Dana’s comment on the song.

This song does nothing for me musically, and the lyrics are fairly awful. I’m surprised this even caught Martin’s attention.

Never one to mince words, that Dana! Well, Happy Birthday… please enjoy this song you hate. 🙂

I know it doesn’t seem that way
But maybe it’s the perfect day
Even though the bills are piling
And maybe lady luck ain’t smiling

But if we’d only open our eyes
We’d see the blessings in disguise
That all the rain clouds are fountains
Though our troubles seem like mountains
There’s gold in them hills
There’s gold in them hills
So don’t lose heart
Give the day a chance to start

Every now and then life says
Where do you think you’re going so fast
We’re apt to think it cruel but sometimes
It’s a case of cruel to be kind

And if we’d get up off our knees
Why then we’d see the forest for the trees
And we’d see the new sun rising
Over the hills on the horizon
There’s gold in them hills
There’s gold in them hills

So don’t lose faith
Give the world a chance to say…
A word or two, my friend
There’s no telling how the day might end
And we’ll never know until we see
That there’s gold in them hills
There’s gold in them hills
So don’t lose heart
Give the day a chance to start
There’s gold in them hills
There’s gold in them hills

First, thank you for the birthday wishes.

Second, I think (hope) I’ve become less harsh in my opinions and criticisms than I was at the tender young age of 46. Listening now, I really have no viscerally negative reaction to this song. The music is pleasant enough and I don’t even hate the lyrics.

I see my sister, who was closer to my current age at the time, really liked this song when it was posted 7 years ago, and questioned if she was a sap for feeling that way. To be fair, back in 2013, you had subjected your most loyal commenter to a steady diet of the melancholy, monotonous Sexsmith the previous year, so I may have been more cranky because of that.

Perhaps in 2025, a live or cover version of this song will be chosen by the Random iTunes Fairy for my birthday as a further check of my musical mental state, and I will like it as much as my sister did – or maybe I will be an even crankier 58 year old. I guess we shall see as I expect (hope) you will still be doing the SOTD blog and I will still be your most loyal commenter.

    Happy Birthday Dana ❤️
