Song of the Day #4,357: ‘Who Am I (What’s My Name)?’ – Snoop Doggy Dogg

It’s time for the next installment of my Decades series, wherein I dive into the albums from a certain year across four decades. Currently I’m on the 3’s, having covered 1973 and 1983. That brings us to 1993, the year I turned 21.

I generally have a pretty low opinion of the 90s as a musical decade, at least in terms of what dominated the radio and the charts. But I hope to unearth some gems.

As always, I will start by counting down my own favorite albums of 1993 before highlighting ten albums new to me that received critical/commercial acclaim.

In my personal #10 spot is Snoop Doggy Dogg’s debut album, Doggystyle. Snoop played a large guest role on Dr. Dre’s classic The Chronic the year before, and here — with Dre’s production — he staked a claim as a leader of the West Coast rap scene.

I’m not a big rap fan in general, but I do love the G-funk sound of this record. Dr. Dre took 70s funk beats and made them thicker, slower, deeper, then layered in keyboards and vocal melodies to craft the ultimate backyard party sound.

Snoop Dogg’s laid back vocals are a perfect compliment, even if his lyrics are equal parts childish and offensive. It’s funny to picture the man behind this album co-hosting cooking shows with Martha Stewart.

Few albums can be credited with creating a whole new sound, and this is one of them. Doggystyle sold 11 million copies worldwide and has come to be recognized as one of the most important and influential rap albums of all time.

[Intro]
Eee-ya-ya-ya-ya-yah The Dogg Pound’s in the house (the bomb)
Eee-ya-ya-ya-ya-yah The Dogg Pound’s in the house
Snoop Doggy, Dogg (the bomb)

[Verse 1: Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre]
From the depths of the sea, back to the block
Snoop Doggy Dogg, funky as the, the, The D.O.C
Went solo on that ass, but it’s still the same
Long Beach is the spot where I serve my ‘caine
Follow me, follow me, follow me, follow me, but don’t lose your grip

‘Cause I never hesitate to put a nigga on his back

With the Dogg Pound right behind me
And up in yo bitch, is where ya might find me

I increasingly checked out of listening to new music in the 90’s, which was easy to do as I am not a big fan of rap or grunge. Perhaps this theme week will enlighten me on what I missed. So far, not that much. 😜

Just gotta love Martha Stewart 😊
