Song of the Day #3,734: ‘Inexplicable’ – Daniel Gallup

Only once in ten years and 3,733 Songs of the Day have I posted a song by an artist I know personally. That was way back in my first month of SOTD posts, when entry #28 was a pretty ballad called ‘Amy’ by a man named Dana Gallup, whom frequent readers will recognize from the comment section.

Amy and Dana are my sister and brother-in-law, and when I posted that track their son Daniel was just seven years old.

This week, I couldn’t be prouder to post my nephew’s own original material, just released on the Daniel Gallup EP. You can find it on his website as well as your preferred streaming service.

Posting a loved one’s music is a dicey proposition. Even if I hated it, I could never actually say so, and then I’d have to worry if my fake enthusiasm was convincing. Ugh.

Fortunately, Daniel made this easy. He has written and recorded a batch of songs I truly enjoy, spanning genres and influences and demonstrating that he truly has the goods to be a successful singer-songwriter.

First track ‘Inexplicable’ kicks things off with a jolt, driven by a funky-jangly lead guitar part and some excellent drumming. I especially like the chorus, which has stuck with me for days (“I wanna be with you-oo-oo-oo”). This song gives me a Maroon 5 vibe.

Because I’m me, I plan to rank these five songs in order of my preference at the end of the week. ‘Inexplicable’ has made its case quite convincingly.

It’s inexplicable baby the way you make me feel
It’s inexplicable baby nothing’s ever felt this real
It’s inexplicable baby you make me feel all right
It’s inexplicable baby think I could hang with you all night
I don’t know if you know this
But you’ve shown me
A whole new light
Feel like I’ll never be lonely again
Now that you’re in my life

I could spend all night with you by my side
I’ve looked around and found that you’re the only one I desire
We could spend our whole lives trying to overanalyze
But why mess around I don’t have any doubts and the timing’s just right
I wanna be with you
I wanna be with you
I wanna be with you

It’s inexplicable baby the way you make me wanna dance
It’s inexplicable baby you make me wanna take a chance
It’s inexplicable baby the way you disorient me
It’s inexplicable baby one look my way I feel like forfeiting
Yes, with just one glanced I’m entranced
Everything becomes so hazy
With one look my way, what else can I say
Babe you just make me go so crazy

I could spend all night with you by my side
I’ve looked around and found that you’re the only one I desire
We could spend our whole lives trying to overanalyze
But why mess around I don’t have any doubts and the timing’s just right
I wanna be with you
I wanna be with you
I wanna be with you

I could spend all night with you by my side
I’ve looked around and found that you’re the only one I desire
We could spend our whole lives trying to overanalyze
But why mess around I don’t have any doubts and the timing’s just right
I wanna be with you
I wanna be with you
I wanna be with you

It’s crazy that Daniel was 7 when you posted my song! I couldn’t be more proud of him and, while I know he inherited his musicianship and songwriting ability from me, he is clearly an improved next generation model. I hope he has the fortitude and tenacity that I lacked to stick with it and make a career of it as he undoubtedly has the talent (in my completely objective, unbiased opinion.😜).

So glad you pointed out the dicey proposition this could be and that you’re going to make a list ;). Watching the process of these songs being written, revised, performed, arranged, and recorded has been extraordinary. Probably my current favorite part of “Inexplicable” is the way Daniel delivers the line “the way you disorient me.” Thank you, Clay, for being you and for giving your readers a chance to hear our boy’s original music. Look forward to debating the ranking at the end of the week. ;p

As an avid reader and one who respects your musical opinion much, I’m excited to see what you think of my songs. Thank you so much for doing this.

Love it! This is my favorite on the EP. I agree that it sounds like Maroon 5. I’ll actually read and comment on the blog this week! 🙂
