Song of the Day #3,733: ‘El Macho’ – Mark Knopfler

Mark Knopfler’s 2000 album Sailing to Philadephia remains one of the best records of that decade. Every single track is excellent.

This is the first time a song from this album has popped up on a Random Weekend, though this is the fifth of its 13 cuts to feature on the blog. If you don’t know the album, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

I always wondered if today’s song, ‘El Macho,’ was about Jerry Seinfeld, given the repeated use of “Jerry” and the line “I don’t see much TV so you don’t mean shit to me.”

A little research revealed that Knopfler didn’t write the song about anybody in particular and chose the name Jerry because it can refer to either a man or a woman.

Your date has gone home
Now you’re left on your own sweet own
Your tough – talkin’ friend
Split on you in the bitter end
And you look like a fine thing Jerry
Yeh you look like a fine thing Jerry

They say you’re a star
That’s what the boys all say you are
I don’t see much TV
So you don’t mean shit to me
But you look like a fine thing Jerry
Yeh you look like a fine thing Jerry

They got a name for people like you
Yeh they do
And they got a name for people like me too
El Macho, El Macho

Now they want you to sing
Don’t get shy or anything
The boys are all here
Gonna buy you another beer
‘Cos you look like a fine thing Jerry
Yeh you look like a fine thing Jerry
El Macho, El Macho

I agree. This is an excellent album. Interesting notion about Jerry Seinfeld, but I don’t really think It fits the lyrics.

I love this album too, and found you because I was wondering about the meaning of this song. There are at least a half dozen brilliant songs that I love to come back to over and over.
