Song of the Day #2,928: ‘Bad Decisions’ – Ariana Grande

ariana_grande_dangerous_womanIt’s a familiar phenomenon — the Disney child starlet releasing her first real “grown-up” album, embracing frank sexuality in a bid to shock the pop culture system and free her of those PG shackles.

Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera made the move in the early 2000s. Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez did it in the past couple of years. And now it’s Ariana Grande’s turn.

Grande got her start on the Nickelodeon show Victorious, where she played the dim but sweet Cat Valentine. She’s a talented comedic actress, as she proved again on her recent, well-received SNL hosting stint (check out her impressions of Jennifer Lawrence and a host of female musicians). But her amazing vocal chops made it inevitable that music would be her ultimate calling.

Grande’s last album, 2014’s My Everything produced the hits ‘Problem,”Break Free‘ and ‘Love Me Harder,’ all of which reached Billboard’s top ten.

We’ll see if Dangerous Woman produces as many hits as its predecessor. So far the title track has cracked the top ten and recent release ‘Into You’ is currently climbing. Hits or not, I hear a lot to like on this record. It’s confident and sexy and offers hooks galore. One too many guest appearances, maybe (Sorry, Lil Wayne, I don’t get you and never will), but another in a string of very solid pop releases over the past few years.

It’s funny, as I’ve gotten older I find myself liking this kind of pop music more than I ever did as a kid or young adult. It’s not that the music is any better, because I find myself liking similar songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s more now than I did then, too.

I think I’ve just gotten less snobbish in my musical tastes. As the great Bob Dylan once sang, “I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now.”

[Verse 1]
Boy, you know that you drive me crazy
But it’s one of the things I like
Cause I know when you need it, baby
That I got that, ooh ooh
Let ’em keep, let ’em keep on talkin’
But it don’t matter what they say
Cause you know when you hear me knockin’
Gonna get that, ooh ooh[Pre-Chorus]
I’ve been doing stupid things
Wilder than I’ve ever been
You’ve become my favorite sin
So let ’em keep, let ’em keep on talking
That’s right
[Chorus]
We got that hood love
We got that good love
We got that hot love
We got that “I don’t give a what” love
We got that one life
Gimme that all night
We got that Bonnie and Clyde love
They say it’s wrong, but that’s the way you turn me on
We got that hood love
We got that good love
Make me make bad
Boy, you make me make bad decisions
Bad boy, you make me make bad decisions

[Verse 2]
No, they ain’t gonna understand it
Understand what I see in you
They don’t know when you touch my body
That I see the truth
Let ’em keep, let ’em keep on talking
Cause I know that I got someone
Anytime that I need some danger
Gonna get that, ooh ooh

[Pre-Chorus]
I’ve been doing stupid things
Wilder than I’ve ever been
You’ve become my favorite sin
So let ’em keep, let ’em keep on talking
That’s right

[Chorus]
We got that hood love
We got that good love
We got that hot love
We got that “I don’t give a what” love
We got that one life
Gimme that all night
We got that Bonnie and Clyde love
They say it’s wrong, but that’s the way you turn me on
We got that hood love
We got that good love
Make me make bad
Boy, you make me make bad decisions
Bad boy, you make me make bad decisions

[Bridge]
Don’t you know I ain’t fuckin’ with them good boys?
Know you love me like ain’t nobody could, boy
If you want it, boy, you got it
Ain’t you ever seen a princess be a bad bitch?

[Chorus]
We got that hood love
We got that good love
We got that hot love
We got that “I don’t give a what” love
We got that one life
Gimme that all night
We got that Bonnie and Clyde love
They say it’s wrong, but that’s the way you turn me on
We got that hood love
We got that good love
Make me make bad
Boy, you make me make bad decisions
Bad, boy, you make me make bad decisions
Bad boy, you make me make bad decisions

  1. Dana says:

In which cover song did Dylan write that?😄

I enjoy some modern pop music, but I don’t listen in heavy doses and don’t seek out the albums. If it sounds good on the radio, it stays on, at least while the kids are in the car. And I too admit to warming up to older pop songs, mostly from the 80’s, but I think that comes from a sense of nostalgia more than anything else.
