The internet is funny.
On the YouTube clip of today’s Random Weekend SOTD, posted by some kind soul in September of 2009, a flame war broke out between somebody comparing Ron Sexsmith to Paul McCartney and a McCartney detractor.
It was a short battle, only a few posts long though it spanned a month. The Sexsmith fan accused his opponent of lacking “couth,” a nice touch.
I’ve run out of meaningful things to say about Ron Sexsmith, after posting dozens of his songs on the blog over the years.
Truth be told, I probably ran out of meaningful things to say about him five songs ago.
He’s awesome; I love his work; if you don’t have any of his albums you should remedy that as soon as possible. That about sums it up.
Best Songs of 2013 – #24
Ron Sexsmith’s most impressive quality is his knack for writing melodies that sound instantly familiar.
Every once in awhile I freak myself out with the thought that we really shouldn’t ever hear any new songs, because haven’t all the available combinations of notes (the ones that sound good, anyway) been taken by now?
But then I remember having the same thought 25 years ago, and all of the great music that’s been written since argues against that theory.
Almost all of the albums I’m writing about over the next couple of weeks were purchased during the past month — some as recently as a day or two ago.
The lone exception is today’s features record — Ron Sexsmith’s Forever Endeavour — which I bought all the way back in February.
In fact, this was the first new album I picked up in 2013.
After dominating this blog in 2011 during the controversial Ron Sexsmith Weekends, Canadian songwriter Ron Sexsmith made only three appearances in 2012. And here we are, more than halfway through 2013 when he makes his first appearance this year.
Today’s track is probably best known (to the extent that anything Ron Sexsmith does is known) because a second version was released on which Sexsmith duets with Coldplay’s Chris Martin. I’ve even seen the song posted online as a Coldplay tune featuring Ron Sexsmith (silly Coldplay fans!).
