Song of the Day #6,480: ‘Mr. Jones’ – Freedom Fry

I’m much more of a movie guy than a TV guy. I’m fully aware that the small screen features some of the greatest creative work being done these days, but it’s just not my preferred medium. I suppose it’s the time commitment and the uncertainty of renewals that keeps me from signing on to new shows.

I’ve certainly made exceptions. Breaking Bad is one of my all-time favorite achievements in any medium, and Better Call Saul nearly matched its brilliance. And my daughter and I remain devoted fans of Survivor 25 years into its run.

Song of the Day #5,367: ‘American’ – Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey piggybacked on the success of Born to Die by releasing an EP titled Paradise in November of 2012. She included the EP in a special edition of the album as well.

The eight-song Paradise finds Del Rey delivering more of the baroque pop featured on her debut and fewer of the trip-hop beats. On opening track ‘Ride,’ she channels Bruce Springsteen, one of her more surprising influences.

Song of the Day #5,146: ‘Yayo’ – Lana Del Rey

‘Yayo’ is a track from Lana Del Rey’s 2012 EP Paradise, released less than a year after her breakthrough album, Born to Die.

This is actually the third release of this song. It first appeared on a 2008 three-song EP titled Kill Kill under Del Rey’s given name, Lizzie Grant. The same version showed up on Del Rey’s self-titled full-length debut, released in 2010 but subsequently removed from circulation.

Song of the Day #2,601: ‘Ride’ – Lana Del Rey

lana_del_rey_paradiseLana Del Rey’s new album, Honeymoon comes out on September 18. This is exciting news for my daughter and me, both big fans of the mournful chanteuse.

It is less exciting for my wife, who finds Del Rey boring and annoying. As we remind her regularly… haters gonna hate.

While looking up Honeymoon‘s release date, I discovered that Del Rey released an 8-song EP titled Paradise in between her last two full-length albums. New music before the new music!
