#16. Monsters, Inc. (2001)

I don’t have anything bad to say about Monsters, Inc. yet it slipped to a rather low position relative to the rest of Pixar’s lineup.

I love the imagination that went into Monstropolis, and the whole idea of an economy that runs on the bureaucratic collection of children’s screams. And as I wrote in yesterday’s post, Billy Crystal and John Goodman turn in winning performances.

Song of the Day #3,169: ‘Nowhere’ – Ride

ride_nowhereI certainly learn things doing these ‘Decades’ posts. For example, I’d never heard of the “shoegazing” genre, which began in the U.K. in the late 80s.

Named after the playing style of band members who stood motionless onstage staring at the floor while playing, but referring as well to the mix of distortion and feedback typical of their songs, “shoegazing” sounds like the soundtrack of Hell.

Song of the Day #3,014: ‘Ride’ – twenty one pilots

twenty_one_pilots_rideTwenty one pilots have their second top ten song of the week with ‘Ride,’ sitting at #9. According to Wikipedia, this makes them the first alternative artist to have two songs in Billboard’s top ten at the same time. I wonder how they define alternative?

‘Ride’ is my favorite of the three twenty one pilots songs I’ve featured on the blog to date (the other two being ‘Stressed Out‘ and ‘Heathens‘).

Song of the Day #2,601: ‘Ride’ – Lana Del Rey

lana_del_rey_paradiseLana Del Rey’s new album, Honeymoon comes out on September 18. This is exciting news for my daughter and me, both big fans of the mournful chanteuse.

It is less exciting for my wife, who finds Del Rey boring and annoying. As we remind her regularly… haters gonna hate.

While looking up Honeymoon‘s release date, I discovered that Del Rey released an 8-song EP titled Paradise in between her last two full-length albums. New music before the new music!
