Today’s track is the third Random Weekend selection from Sarah McLachlan’s 2003 album Afterglow, and the first in more than nine years.

This album holds a special place in Random Weekend history because it contains the very first song featured as part of the series, way back on January 21, 2012.

That’s right, we’ve had more than 11 years of Random Weekends.

Song of the Day #4,091: ‘Afterglow’ – Taylor Swift

After the two week Quentin Tarantino countdown, I’m still in the mood to rank things. So I thought I’d try something new and comment on a new album by ranking all of its songs in order over the course of a week.

Taylor Swift’s Lover gets the honor. Released a few weeks back, this album has gotten better with each listen. It feels like a natural synthesis of Swift’s country and pop periods, as well as her most mature and best-sounding album yet. I’ve always had a soft spot for Speak Now, but Lover might surpass it as my favorite Swift album.

Song of the Day #2,004: ‘Fallen’ – Sarah McLachlan

mclachlan_afterglowIn 16 days, I’ll reach the two-year anniversary of Random Weekends. Reaching 2,000 Songs of the Day was an impressive milestone, but somehow the two years of Random Weekends throws me even more.

That’s because I can remember very clearly deciding to move off of artist-specific weekends and into random mode. And it feels like that was just the other day.

Song of the Day #1,287: ‘Time’ – Sarah McLachlan

I’ve gone through seven different weekend series over the past two and a half years. Starting in May of 2009, I’ve featured (in order) Motown, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Ron Sexsmith, Brad Paisley and Paul Simon.

Faced with the need for a new weekend theme, my first thought was that I’d have to go with a woman. With the exception of about half of the Motown tracks, I’ve gone through 250+ weekend songs by men.
