Song of the Day #213: ‘Put You in Your Place’ – The Sunshine Underground

subwayTo finish off amateur week, I’m moving away from the musicians and putting the spotlight on my new idol, a guy who goes by the handle grammapolice. He doesn’t sing or play an instrument (at least not on YouTube)… he dances. Boy, does he dance.

Grammapolice runs the Davey Dance Blog, which consists of video clips of him dancing to different pop songs in locations all over the world. It’s one of those ideas that’s so good you wonder why it took so long for somebody to do it.

I guess it’s a matter of the right person at the right time.

Song of the Day #212: ‘Angeles’ – Mitch Gettman

mitchOf all the artists in my collection, none better typifies the spirit of sitting alone in a room singing with a guitar than Elliott Smith. So I thought it fitting to close out this theme week with a cover of one of Smith’s (classic!) songs.

Song of the Day #211: ‘I Am the Walrus’ – fiomily

fiomilyOK, this might just be my favorite video on YouTube. I happened upon these sisters named Fiona and Emily (aged 14 and 16, though they look much younger in many of their clips) and they’re irresistible.

Song of the Day #210: ‘All My Loving’ – Julia Nunes

nunesThis is turning into one of my favorite weeks in the Song of the Day series. There are just so many talented and interesting people out there, all waiting to be discovered on the wonder that is YouTube.

Today’s performer, Julia Nunes, is definitely the quirkiest I’ve encountered so far. In addition to her great voice and ukulele work, she is an expert sound mixer. Most of her videos consist of her on multiple instruments as well as harmony vocals and beat-box style percussion.

Song of the Day #209: ‘Hey Ya’ – Hayley Legg

hayleyHave to regain my manliness after Mr. Dreamy’s song yesterday, so I’m going back to the cute girl well.

Hayley Legg is an Australian with a ton of YouTube videos and her own Web site, which is a great testament to the possibilities afforded a musician in the new technological landscape. She’s unsigned and plays in bars and clubs like aspiring musicians have for eons, but she has a level of exposure unheard of a decade ago.
