Song of the Day #2,266: ‘Nothing Even Matters’ – Lauryn Hill

laurynOne-hit wonders are awfully common, but one-album wonders are a bit more rare. And 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill might be the best example.

This thing was a monster hit, a cultural touchstone, a Grammy winner for Best Album. And it was the last memorable thing Lauryn Hill ever did.

In fact, the only other solo album she ever released was a live recording of her appearance on MTV’s Unplugged. That was in 2002.

Song of the Day #2,265: ‘Tightly’ – Neko Case

nekocaseNeko Case is one of those artists who can’t quite crack my “must listen” list even though everything she does sounds great.

The major exception is her 2006 album Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, which broke through to hold a spot among my favorite albums of that decade.

But the albums she’s released before and since just haven’t had the same lasting appeal.

Song of the Day #2,258: ‘Jackson’ – Johnny Cash & June Carter

johnny_cash_jacksonJohnny Cash are certainly the most famous husband and wife singing duo in history. Their story is so beloved it was made into an Oscar winning film.

Second place would probably go to another couple whose story was made into a very different sort of film. That would be Ike and Tina Turner, whose abusive relationship was captured in What’s Love Got to Do With It.

Song of the Day #2,252: ‘When the Levee Breaks’ – Led Zeppelin

led_zeppelin_ivLed Zeppelin is one of those bands, like Pink Floyd, that we’re expected to outgrow.

Every teenage boy has a Led Zeppelin phase, right? But how many listen to the band as adults?

Or maybe I’m just generalizing based on my own experience. I know I gobbled up all of the Zeppelin albums in high school and college but haven’t listened to one of them all the way through since.
