Song of the Day #2,209: ‘God Put a Smile Upon Your Face’ – Coldplay

rush_of_bloodI was surprised to see that this is only the fourth Coldplay song to make the blog in six years of Song of the Day posts.

It’s not that I’m a huge Coldplay fan, but they have a big enough profile (and enough good songs) to make the cut more than four times out of 2,209. And two of the four have come on Random Weekends, at that.

Song of the Day #2,208: ‘Boom Clap’ – Charli XCX

charli_xcxFinishing up this week’s look at the Billboard Hot 100 is Charli XCX, whose ‘Boom Clap’ sits at #13.

Charli XCX is a new name to me, but the 21-year-old British songwriter has put her stamp on a couple of recent hits. One is the ubiquitous ‘Fancy,’ on which she sings the chorus, and the other is Icona Pop’s ‘I Love It,’ which she both wrote and performs on.

Song of the Day #2,207: ‘Burnin’ It Down’ – Jason Aldean

jason_aldeanRounding out spots 8-11 on the Billboard chart are a quartet of songs I’ve already featured as part of my focus on hit singles this year. If I’ve learned one thing it’s that there isn’t much turnover on this list.

At #8 is John Legend’s ‘All of Me,’ in its 42nd week on the chart. Ninth is Sia’s ‘Chandelier,’ entering the top ten for the first time. In the tenth spot is Calvin Harris’ ‘Summer,’ which didn’t own the season the way he must have hoped when he recorded it. And at #11 is Pharrell Williams’ ‘Happy,’ still chugging along.

Song of the Day #2,206: ‘Latch’ – Disclosure featuring Sam Smith

disclosure_latchAt #7 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 is ‘Latch,’ a dance track by British DJ duo Disclosure that features vocals by Sam Smith. This is Smith’s second appearance in the top ten.

Oddly, the video for this song has more anti-gay comments than that of Smith’s own ‘Stay With Me.’ I guess the gay couple in this clip is more front and center, but they’re also a couple of hot lesbians, which I thought was cool even for the Neanderthals.

Song of the Day #2,205: ‘Maps’ – Maroon 5

maroon_5_mapsAt #4 this week is Nico & Vinz, with the boring but popular ‘Am I Wrong?‘ Dropping to fifth place is Ariana Grande’s ‘Problem,’ my pick for Song of the Summer.

‘Problem’ spent awhile at #2, but was unable to unseat ‘Fancy’ for the top spot during that span. As Iggy Izalea raps on ‘Problem,’ that meant she occupied both of those positions for more than a month. She’s certainly the Artist of the Summer (a spot Pharrell earned last year, appearing on both ‘Blurred Lines’ and ‘Get Lucky’).
