For the second straight year, my wife’s birthday falls on a Random Weekend day, allowing me to play the old “whatever song comes up is your birthday dedication” game.
Last year the needle landed on the Cirque du Soleil version of The Beatles’ ‘I Am the Walrus.’ Let’s see what 2014 has in store…
Here’s a song from Lyle Lovett’s 2009 album Natural Forces, written by Texas singer-songwriter Vince Bell.
Lovett stopped making albums of strong original material more than 20 years ago. His last great record, The Road to Ensenada, came out in 1992. That’s just crazy.
Since then he’s been content to play covers and a few lazy originals, apparently content to run out his record contract with half-hearted effort.
We have come to my final Billboard Hot 100 song of 2014.
At #17 this week is Ed Sheeran’s ‘Don’t,’
which sat in the same position when I looked at the charts two months ago. Sheeran has had a hell of a year.
And closing us out at #18 is Dutch rapper/singer Mr. Probz with ‘Waves.’
First of all, Merry Christmas everybody!
I was hoping fate would arrange for a song appropriate for the holiday to land in this position, but alas, we are left with ‘Tuesday’ by rapper I Love Makonnen, a song about a hard-partying drug dealer.
Santa would be proud.
In Billboard’s 15th slot is ‘The Hanging Tree,’ performed by none other than actress Jennifer Lawrence, who can seemingly do no wrong.
Lawrence had to be coaxed into singing the song for a scene in the film, having very little confidence in her voice. I’m sure she never dreamed of landing this high on the Billboard charts.
