Song of the Day #2,489: ‘Crazy For You’ – Madonna

madonna_vision_questA week ago, when I finished counting down the songs I most associate with movies, I was surprised to learn that Simple Minds’ ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ was actually written for The Breakfast Club.

Given that fact, what’s even more shocking is that the song wasn’t nominated for an Academy Award. How on earth did that happen?

These were the nominated songs in 1985: ‘Miss Celie’s Blues’ from The Color Purple; ‘The Power of Love’ from Back to the Future; ‘Separate Lives’ from White Nights; ‘Say You, Say Me,’ also from White Nights; and ‘Surprise Surprise’ from The Chorus Line.

And the winner was… Lionel Richie with ‘Say You, Say Me.’

Can anybody honestly argue that any of those songs is a) a better song, and b) more essential to its film than ‘Don’t You Forget About Me?’ I don’t think so.

Over the next two weeks, I’ll count down ten movie songs that inexplicably failed to receive Oscar nominations. I came up with these ten in a highly unscientific manner, by plucking them from a blog entry listing 30 such snubs. I’m sure I’m missing a few but these all stood out.

Two rules I followed were to limit myself to one song per film and one per artist. A couple of movies on this list featured several non-nominated songs and in those cases I went with the most egregious oversight.

So let’s get started…

#10 – Songs Snubbed by Oscar
‘Crazy For You’ – Vision Quest

Madonna’s hit song might be the only lasting element of 1985’s Vision Quest, yet it lost out on a nomination to the same five songs listed above.

‘Crazy For You’ is not only a dynamite love song by the era’s hottest star, but Madonna actually performed the song during a bar scene in the actual movie. What more do you want, Academy? Two songs from White Nights, apparently.

Swaying room as the music starts
Strangers making the most of the dark
Two by two their bodies become one
I see you through the smokey air

Can’t you feel the weight of my stare
You’re so close but still a world away
What I’m dying to say, is that

I’m crazy for you
Touch me once and you’ll know it’s true
I never wanted anyone like this
It’s all brand new, you’ll feel it in my kiss
I’m crazy for you, crazy for you

Trying hard to control my heart
I walk over to where you are
Eye to eye we need no words at all
Slowly now we begin to move

Every breath I’m deeper into you
Soon we two are standing still in time
If you read my mind, you’ll see
It’s all brand new, I’m crazy for you
And you know it’s true
I’m crazy, crazy for you

Great idea for a theme week.

Agreed that this was a snub for Madonna and for Simpke Minds. In both cases, the snub likely reflects the politics of the academy in favoring safer artists like Ritchie and Huey Lewis.

Love this idea for a theme week! And I agree that this was a real snub, never saw the movie, but this song certainly was better then the others.

Two songs from White Nights, apparently? That made me laugh out loud. I almost want to buy a boat just to make that the title 🙂

Love this theme week and I look forward to being outraged as I go through each post. Insane that these two songs were not nominated. INSANE!!!
