Song of the Day #5,401: ‘Flowers’ – Miley Cyrus

In the #2 spot on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 is Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers,’ the debut single from her new album Endless Summer Vacation. ‘Flowers’ debuted at #1 11 weeks ago and spent eight non-consecutive weeks atop the chart.

‘Flowers,’ written about the end of Cyrus’ marriage to actor Liam Hemsworth, is her second #1 single, following 2013’s ‘Wrecking Ball.’ Old school Miley hit ‘Party in the U.S.A.’ peaked at #2 back in 2009 (it couldn’t best The Black Eye Peas’ ‘I Gotta Feeling,’ and if remembering those two radio staples doesn’t drop you right back into the late ’00s, nothing will).

As impressive as ‘Flowers” chart success is its video’s depiction of Cyrus’ chiseled abs and the workout routine she utilizes to achieve them. This is a motivational clip for both newly-single women and those looking to drop a few pounds.

I like this song a lot, and it reminds me that I have to give the rest of Endless Summer Vacation a listen.

[Verse 1]
We were good, we were gold
Kinda dream that can’t be sold
We were right ’til we weren’t
Built a home and watched it burn[Pre-Chorus]
Mm, I didn’t wanna leave you, I didn’t wanna lie
Started to cry, but then remembered I

[Chorus]
I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours
Say things you don’t understand
I can take myself dancing
And I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can

[Post-Chorus]
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby

[Verse 2]
Paint my nails cherry-red
Match the roses that you left
No remorse, no regret
I forgive every word you said

[Pre-Chorus]
Ooh, I didn’t wanna leave you, baby, I didn’t wanna fight
Started to cry, but then remembered I

[Chorus]
I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours, yeah
Say things you don’t understand
I can take myself dancing, yeah
I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can

[Post-Chorus]
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby
Can love me better, I (Ooh, I)

[Bridge]
I didn’t wanna leave you, I didn’t wanna fight
Started to cry, but then remembered I

[Chorus]
I can buy myself flowers (Uh-huh)
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours (Yeah)
Say things you don’t understand (You never will)
I can take myself dancing, yeah
I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than
Yeah, I can love me better than you can

[Post-Chorus]
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby (Uh)
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby (Than you can)
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby
Can love me better, I

Love Miley and love this song, though I was still rooting for an eventual reunion with Liam. Diana Keaton posting herself dancing around her yard to this song is one of the best things I’ve seen this year. 💗

This song has not been on my radar save for that Diane Keaton clip, but I always tend to like Miley’s music. I think we should all adopt her workout routine. Maybe she gives lessons in her Malibu home?

  3. I heard this song playing on a local radio station earlier this year and was immediately hooked. Great groove, sweet melody, wise message…

    Good track!
