Song of the Day #5,402: ‘Last Night’ – Morgan Wallen

Morgan Wallen is having a hell of a year. The country star released his third studio album, One Thing at a Time, in March and saw all 36(!) of its tracks reach the Billboard Hot 100.

That gave him the record for most songs on the list at one time (sorry, Drake). Of course, if any major artist decides to release a 37-track album that record will easily fall. Taylor Swift, Rihanna… get on it. Perhaps more impressive, Wallen also occupied five of the top ten slots for a period.

This week’s #3 song on the Hot 100 is ‘Last Night,’ the album’s third single and the only one to reach #1. In doing so, it became the first song by a solo male country artist to hit the top spot since Eddie Rabbit’s ‘I Love a Rainy Night’ in 1980.

I’m not sure what it is about Wallen or this song that led to such success. It sounds to me like generic bro country pop, certainly not offensive but certainly not impressive either.

[Chorus]
Last night we let the liquor talk
I can’t remember everything we said but we said it all
You told me that you wish I was somebody you never met
But baby, baby somethin’s tellin’ me this ain’t over yet
No way it was our last night

[Verse 1]
I kiss your lips
Make you grip the sheets with your fingertips
Last bottle of Jack, we split a fifth
Just talkin’ about life goin’ sip for sip, yeah
You, you know you love to fight
And I say shit I don’t mean
But I’m still gon’ wake up wantin’ you and me

[Chorus]
I know that last night we let the liquor talk
I can’t remember everything we said but we said it all
You told me that you wish I was somebody you never met
But baby, baby somethin’s tellin’ me this ain’t over yet
No way it was our last night (Last night)
No way it was our last night (Last night)

[Verse 2]
No way it was the last night that we break up
I see your tail lights in the dust
You called your momma, I call your bluff
In the middle of the night, pull her right back up
Yeah my, my friends say “Let her go”
Your friends say “What the hell?”
I wouldn’t trade your kind of love for nothin’ else

[Chorus]
Oh baby, last night we let the liquor talk
I can’t remember everything we said but we said it all
You told me that you wish I was somebody you never met
But baby, baby somethin’s tellin’ me this ain’t over yet
No way it was our last night, we said we’d had enough
I can’t remember everything we said but we said too much
I know you packed your shit and slammed the door right before you left
But baby, baby somethin’s tellin’ me this ain’t over yet
No way it was our last night (Last night)
No way it was our last night (Last night)

[Outro]
I know you said this time you really weren’t comin’ back again
But baby, baby somethin’s tellin’ me this ain’t over yet
No way it was our last night (Last night)
No way it was our last night (Last night)

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Morgan Wallen would be completely off my radar if it were not for his being canceled by SNL due to COVID protocol violations and then returning to the show to mock what happened.

    • Clay says:

There was also the incident where he was caught on tape drunkenly using the n-word. Sadly, that actually led to an increase in his sales.
