Song of the Day #5,400: ‘Like Crazy’ – Jimin

We’ve had a glorious five straight weeks of Lana Del Rey (sorry, haters!) but now it’s time for something completely different.

While Del Rey’s new album debuted at #3 on the albums chart, with the largest vinyl sales and streaming numbers of her career, it did not place any singles on the Billboard Hot 100. That’s par for the course for Del Rey, who has always been more of an album artist than a singles artist.

So rest assured, you will not encounter any Lana Del Rey for the next two weeks, when I look at the Billboard Hot 100 in the latest installment of ‘What the Kids are Listening To.’

It’s been eight months since I did one of these (not counting January’s special year-end edition) so we should have a whole batch of new songs to cover.

Kicking things off is BTS member Jimin, whose solo single ‘Like Crazy’ debuted in the top spot of the Hot 100, making him the highest charting South Korean solo artist in history. Jimin is no stranger to this territory when alongside his bandmates — BTS has six #1 hits under their belt — but it must feel pretty good to reach the summit on his own.

I’m surprised that PSY’s glorious ‘Gangnam Style’ missed the #1 spot during its run in late 2012, but alas, it peaked at #2 (blocked from the top spot by Maroon 5′ ‘One More Night.’)

Somebody unfamiliar with BTS (like me) might assume any solo work by one of its members would have an easy shot at Billboard’s highest ranks, but it turns out every one of the band’s members has released solo material of one sort or another without coming close to this kind of performance.

So what’s different about ‘Like Crazy?’ It’s a catchy synth-pop song that could have come from The Weekend if half the lyrics weren’t in Korean (an English version was also released, though it has a fraction of the views on YouTube). I don’t know if this is similar to the other BTS solo work, but it does seem to be a good fit for mainstream radio right now.

[지민 “Like Crazy” 가사]

[Intro]
(I think we could last forever
I’m afraid that everything will disappear
Just trust me)

[Verse 1]
She’s saying
Baby,
There’s not a bad thing here tonight
Baby,

[Verse 2]
Watch me go
(Away)

[Pre-Chorus]
Yeah, I know
You know, I know (Ooh)

[Chorus]
I’d rather be
Lost in the lights
Lost in the lights
I’m outta my mind
You spin me up high
Let me have a taste

[Post-Chorus]
Give me a good ride (Oh, I’m fallin’, I’m fallin’, I’m fallin’)
It’s gon’ be a good night (Oh, I’m fallin’)
Forever, you and I

[Interlude]
Mmm-hmm
Yeah, hey
Mmm-hmm
Ooh-woah
Mmm-hmm
Mmm-hmm
(Forever, you and I)

[Verse 3]
I’m feelin’ so alive, wasting time

[Chorus]
I’d rather be
Lost in the lights
Lost in the lights
I’m outta my mind
You spin me up high
Let me have a taste

[Post-Chorus]
Give me a good ride (Oh, I’m fallin’, I’m fallin’, I’m fallin’)
It’s gon’ be a good night (Oh, I’m fallin’)
Forever, you and I

[Outro]
This will break me
This is gonna break me (Break me)
No, don’t you wake me (Wake me)
I wanna stay in this dream, don’t save me
Don’t you try to save me (Save me)
I need a way we (Way we)
I need a way we can dream on (On, on, on)
(Alone again
What’s the point?)

  1. Dana Gallup says:

If only Lana Del Ray sang in Korean, she would be topping the charts also!

  2. Amy says:

Speaking of good fits for mainstream radio, have you heard or read about the AI Weekend/Drake “collab” that fans apparently love? That must have the creative industry shaking in their boots!

I was just reading about that. I couldn’t hear it because it’s been removed due to copyright claims. Crazy to think where that could lead.
