Our next Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee from the Class of 2014 is KISS, the New York City glam metal band that brought a whole new level of theatricality to hard rock.

From the mid-70s through the early 80s, dolled up in face paint and elaborate costumes, KISS put on elaborate stage shows and courted controversy by leaning into rumors of devil worship. In 1983, the band entered its “unmasked” era, finding new success absent to makeup and costumes.

Over the course of its career, KISS has released 30 Gold albums, a record among American bands. Fourteen of those went Platinum or multi-Platinum. And yet, the band had to wait 10 years after its first Rock Hall eligibility to make the list of finalists. That year, 2010, they missed the cut, but they returned for consideration four years later and gained entry into the Hall in 2014.

This is the first KISS song to grace Meet Me in Montauk after more than 5,100 Songs of the Day, so I’m in no position to offer an opinion on the band’s Hall of Fame worthiness. Given their commercial success, and their bold, influential stage persona, I have to think they deserve the honor.
