Song of the Day #5,109: ‘About a Girl’ – Nirvana

Nirvana has made a couple of recent appearances on the blog, during my Seattle vacation week and my look at the albums of 1994, and it’s no surprise to see them as inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The Seattle grunge band made it into the Hall in their first year of eligibility, despite releasing only three studio albums and one live recording between 1989 and 1994. Their musical influence, and the tragic rock star status of frontman Kurt Cobain, made them shoo-ins for admission.

It doesn’t hurt that those four albums were all massive hits, going Platinum, Diamond, 5X Platinum and 8X Platinum in the United States alone. The band had only one top ten single, 1991’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ but that song defined a musical genre and gave voice to an apathetic generation.

Whether or not you like Nirvana’s music, it’s hard to argue against their one-ballot inclusion in the Rock Hall.

[Verse 1]
I need an easy friend
I do, with an ear to lend
I do think you fit this shoe
I do, but you have a clue

[Chorus]
I’ll take advantage while
You hang me out to dry
But I can’t see you every night
Free (I do)

[Verse 2]
I’m standing in your line
I do hope you have the time
I do pick a number too
I do keep a date with you

[Chorus]
I’ll take advantage while
You hang me out to dry
But I can’t see you every night
Free

[Guitar Solo]

[Verse 3]
I need an easy friend
I do, with an ear to lend
I do think you fit this shoe
I do, but you have a clue

[Chorus]
I’ll take advantage while
You hang me out to dry
But I can’t see you every night
No, I can’t see you every night
Free

[Outro]
I do
I do
I do
I do

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Can’t say I’m a big fan, but I don’t doubt they should be in the Rock Hall.
