Song of the Day #5,107: ‘She’s Gone’ – Daryl Hall & John Oates

Our next inductee from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 2014 class is Hall & Oates, or as the pair insists they be called, Daryl Hall & John Oates.

Hall & Oates were first eligible for the Hall in 1998, and went un-nominated until their 2014 inclusion. That’s a pretty long wait for an act as successful as this duo. They released eight Platinum and six Gold albums, and had six singles reach #1. An additional ten singles made it to the Top Ten.

In fact, Daryl Hall and John Oates are the most commercially successful duo of all time. Their smooth blend of pop and soul clearly hit a nerve for music fans, even if it didn’t reach the same heights with critics.

I’ve heard a lot of Hall & Oates on my beloved Yacht Rock radio station, and I definitely consider myself a fan. My wife remembers listening to the duo’s greatest hits tape on a loop during high school. And my daughters have latched on to the hits. So in this household, at least, their Rock Hall inclusion is a no-brainer.

I’d like to hear some of the deeper cuts, particularly on the duo’s earlier albums when they were piecing together their sound, mashing up folk and rock influences with R&B and Philly soul.

[Verse 1]
Everybody’s high on consolation
Everybody’s trying to tell me what is right for me, yeah
My daddy tried to bore me with a sermon
But it’s plain to see that they can’t comfort me

Sorry, Charlie, for the imposition
I think I got it (got it), I got the strength to carry on, oh yeah
I need a drink and a quick decision
Now it’s up to me, ooh, what will be

[Chorus]
She’s gone, she’s gone
Oh I, oh I
I better learn how to face it
She’s gone, she’s gone
Oh I, oh I
I’d pay the devil to replace her
She’s gone, and she’s gone
Oh why, what went wrong?

[Verse 2]
Get up in the morning, look in the mirror
One less toothbrush hanging in the stand, yeah
My face ain’t looking any younger
Now I can see love’s taken a toll on me

[Chorus]
She’s gone, she’s gone
Oh I, oh I
I better learn how to face it
She’s gone, and she’s gone
Oh I, oh I
I’d pay the devil to replace her
She’s gone, and she’s gone
Oh why, what went wrong?

[Verse 3]
Think I’ll spend eternity in the city
Let the carbon and monoxide choke my thoughts away, yeah
And pretty bodies help dissolve the memories
They can never be what she was (was) to (to) me

[Chorus]
She’s gone, she’s gone
Oh I, oh I
I better learn how to face it
She’s gone, and she’s gone
Oh I, oh I
I’d pay the devil to replace her
She’s gone, and she’s gone
Oh I, what went wrong?

[Chorus]
She’s gone
Oh I, I better learn how to face it
She’s gone, she’s gone
I can’t believe that she’s gone
Oh I, I’d pay the devil to replace her
She’s gone
Oh I, I better learn how to face it
She’s gone, she’s gone
I can’t believe that she’s gone
Oh I, I’d pay the devil to replace her
She’s gone, she’s gone
She’s gone, she’s gone
She’s gone, she’s gone

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I’m on board with their inclusion in the Rock Hall, and I too am a fan, as is my family, particularly Daniel.

A deep dive into their discography would be fun.

  2. Rob says:

“Abandoned Luncheonate” is a good start for your deep dive. Tracks like “When The Morning Comes”, “Las Vegas Turnaround” and “Had I Known You Better” all received solid FM airplay in Montreal at the time. Most of their subsequent albums all had a hit or at least a minor hit … up until “Voices” dropped in 1980 – then all hell broke loose.
