Continuing my ranking of the songs on Phoebe Bridgers’ Lost Weekend…
#6. ‘Bobby’
One of the funny things about Bridgers’ catalog is that she almost never writes upbeat songs, but when she does they are absolute bangers. Such is the case with ‘Bobby,’ a full-on love song written for (and, amusingly, co-written by) Bo Burnham. This song captures the infatuation of early love just beautifully. It’s also the only love song I can think of with a reference to a vibrator (though the lyric is made less explicit in streaming versions of the song).
#5. ‘Lost Boys‘
Lost Weekend‘s first single is another upbeat song, and a great one. This one is harder to parse, lyrically, than most of the album. Is it about the immature men surrounding her? Another song about her father? Maybe all of the above?
#4. ‘Kill Me’
This early track, the album’s third, depicts the start of Bridgers’ relationship with Burnham, and the discombobulating effect it had on her life (understandable, considering she was engaged to Paul Mescal at the time). “This is gonna kill me,” she sings in the chorus, referring to the tumult of her life, but after a beat she adds “wait,” suggesting she’s excited by the prospect that it won’t.

→ My exploration of Phoebe Bridgers’ catalog
I saw you slow dancing alone in your room
I wanted to buy you a new pair of shoes
Now you’re walkin’ around with my heart on your sleeve
And I am right here, bleeding
Oh-oh
Oh, no
[Verse 2]
So you followed me home, like you’d done it before
And you had to bend over to get through the door
And if you didn’t like either one of my friends
I’d kill them, I’d kill them
[Chorus]
Bobby
This could be the end of wanting
(Ah)
[Verse 3]
Now I sleep in your shirts and you live in my house
You sing in the shower, I talk to myself
We’ve got stars on the ceiling and clothes on the floor
And a thing in a box I don’t fuck anymore
[Chorus]
Bobby
This could bе the end of wanting (Bobby)
I exist only if you’rе watching
[Post-Chorus]
Oh-oh
Oh, no
[Bridge]
This could be the end
This could be the end
This could be the end
This could be the end
[Verse 4]
Now I don’t know if I can make it tonight
But what are you doing the rest of my life, Bobby?
[Spoken Outro]
