I was very excited last week to hear from John Mayer, in the form of both a new single and details about his next album, Sob Rock, due in July. Mayer’s last full-length album, The Search for Everything, dropped in early 2017, making this the longest draught between releases in his career.
Mayer did trickle out a few singles over the past four years, and it turns out all of them will be on this album. That’s a bit disappointing, as I’d prefer a whole batch of new songs. But I’ll take what I can get.
As you can tell by the deliberately dated album cover (love that familiar “nice price” sticker!), Sob Rock owes a big debt to the soft rock sound of the 80s.
New single ‘Last Train Home’ makes that connection clear, with Toto members Lenny Castro and Greg Phillinganes on drums and keyboards, respectively. Indeed, the song sounds like it could sit on an album alongside that band’s ‘Rosanna’ or ‘Africa.’ If Sob Rock is John Mayer’s yacht rock album, color me excited as hell!
‘Last Train Home’ is almost too radio-friendly. Clocking in at three minutes, and not even bothering with a bridge, it’s over before it begins. Mayer even fades out on his own guitar solo, while featured guest Maren Morris offers up backing vocals. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear a longer version on the finished album.
Whatever he serves up, I’m confident I’ll be happy with the results. Through seven previous albums, Mayer hasn’t taken a serious misstep yet.
If you wanna roll me
Then you gotta roll me all night long
And if you wanna use me
Then you gotta use me till I’m gone
[Chorus]
I’m not a fallen angel, I just fell behind
I’m out of luck and I’m out of time
If you don’t wanna love me, let me go
I’m runnin’ for the last train
I’m runnin’ for the last train home
[Verse 2]
If you wanna know me
Then you gotta know me through and through
(Da-da-da, da-da-da
Da-da-da, da-da-da)
And if you’re gonna hurt me
Then you gotta hold me next to you
(Da-da-da, da-da-da
Da-da-da, da-da-da)
[Chorus]
No matter how you work it, things go wrong
I put my heart where it don’t belong
So if you’re comin’ with me, let me know
Maybe you’re the last train
Maybe you’re the last train home
[Outro]
I’m on the last train runnin’
I’m on the last train runnin’
And I surrender, and I surrender
I’m on the last train runnin’
I’m on the last train runnin’
And I surrender, and I surrender
I’m on the last train runnin’
I’m on the last train runnin’
And I surrender, and I surrender
I’m on the last train runnin’
I’m on the last train runnin’
And I surrender, and I surrender
Oh-yeah
Oh-uh-uh-uh
While I do not consider myself to be a big fan of Mayer, as a child of the 80’s (who slapped hundreds of “Nice Price” stickers on records working at Vibrations record store) I like the concept behind this album.
Even though I can’t stand him as a person, I did vibe with what he’s put out so far.
I’m incredibly excited for this album though I do agree I wish that the three singles released could stand on their own especially on a 10 track album. This 80s vibe works for me and I’m excited to see how he explores it throughout this upcoming album.
