Today’s Random Weekend selection is a by-the-numbers blues song from Bob Dylan’s 2009 album Together Through Life.
Dylan was 68 when he released this album, a rowdy boot-stomper of a record that came on the heels of his marvelous late-career trilogy of Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft and Modern Times. At the time, it wasn’t out of the question that this would be his last album.
Not even close.
In the 12 years since, Dylan released a Christmas album, three albums of Sinatra-style standards (one of which, Triplicate, contained three albums itself), and two albums of original material. 2020’s Rough and Rowdy Ways received his best reviews in two decades.
Dylan turns 80 next month, and I wouldn’t bet against him having another album or two in him yet.
I get the blues for you, baby, when I look up at the sun
I get the blues for you, baby, when I look up at the sun
Come back here, we can have some real fun
[Verse 2]
Well, it’s early in the evening, and everything is still
Well, it’s early in the evening, and everything is still
One more time, I’m walking up on heartbreak hill
[Chorus 1]
Shake, shake, mama; like a ship going out to sea
Shake, shake, mama; like a ship going out to sea
You took all my money and you give it to Richard Lee
[Verse 4]
Down by the river, Judge Simpson walking around
Down by the river, Judge Simpson walking a-round
Nothing shocks me more than that old clown
[Verse 5]
Some of you women, you really know your stuff
Some of you women, you really know your stuff
But your clothes are all torn
And your language is a little too rough
[Chorus 2]
Shake, shake, mama; shake it til the break of day
Shake, shake, mama; shake it til the break of day
I’m right here, baby, I’m not that far away
[Verse 7]
I’m motherless, fatherless, almost friendless too
I’m motherless, fatherless, almost friendless too
It’s Friday morning on Franklin Avenue
[Chorus 3]
Shake, shake, mama; raise your voice and pray
Shake, shake, mama; raise your voice and pray
If you’re goin on home, ya better go the shortest way
Apparently, according to Rolling Stone, Dylan plans on releasing eleven more albums, one each year from 80 to 90. He even released a list of the anticipated titles:
80. Muddy Waters – The B sides
81. The Bootleg Series Volume 1A – 3A (triple box set featuring reimagined Gaelic versions of the original series)
82. He Has Risen (Easter songs)
83. Only the Voice Croaked (spoken word original music)
84. Debbie Downer (Debbie Gibson covers)
85. Do They Know it’s Hanukkah? (Traditional Jewish songs)
86. Highway 61 to Hell (cover of entire classic AC/DC album)
87. I Can’t Stop Making Sense (originals co-written with David Byrne)
88. One For Each Key of Life (8 volume series featuring Stevie Wonder songs)
89. Enough is Enough ( Barbara Streisand covers)
90. It’s Really Over- the last Bootleg (3 volume set to be released upon passing and played at Dylan’s funeral)
🤣
God bless him, living his best life. He could have written and recorded Blowin’ in the Wind and Like a Rolling Stone and called it a day.
