This is the third Mindy Smith track featured on the blog, all three on Random Weekends. Smith is a country rock artist who was born in Long Island and raised in Tennessee by a Protestant minister. The only album I own of hers, 2004’s One Moment More, is filled with allusions to her Christianity.
The song ‘Come to Jesus,’ her biggest hit, showed up on the blog seven years ago and led to a pretty good discussion about satire, with commenters Dana, Amy and Andrea all chiming in.
I’m proudest of this blog at moments like that, when a throwaway song selection can turn into a thought-provoking debate.
This Random Weekend selection popped up while I’m in the middle of writing about songs offered up by commenters as among their very favorites, and it’s another reminder that I owe much of the success of this blog to the dedication of my most loyal readers.
Thank you!
Well, you should’ve heard the way
I’ve been talking to myself
Treating her like common trash
On the side of the road
And you should’ve seen the ride
I was taking straight to hell
Handing my soul
To the likes of the devil
Sometimes it’s hard to know
That you need to be saved
‘Til you hit the bottom
And rattle that cage
Sometimes you just gotta keep
Digging away
Until you break through
To the light of day
I really didn’t care
‘Cause I was trying to hurt myself
A sticky situation
I’m still trying to work it out
And I didn’t want to know
That I was the one to blame
Pointing my finger
Tryin’ to push all the blame away
Sometimes it’s hard to know
That you need to be saved
‘Til you hit the bottom
And rattle that cage
Sometimes you just gotta keep
Digging away
Until you break through
To the light of day
I don’t wanna die this way
I don’t wanna die this way
I don’t wanna die this way
I know Jesus is alive
And He’s saving me everyday
It just took a little while
To figure out I had to pray
Sometimes it’s hard to know
That you need to be saved
‘Til you hit the bottom
And rattle that cage
Sometimes you just gotta keep
Praying away
Until you break through
To the light of day
The light of day
The light of day
Wow, I just looked back at that epic discussion!
And, you’re welcome…and thank you for keeping this blog going all of these years to educate, inform, entertain and provide a platform for vibrant discussion and debate.
Indeed. Your dedication to this blog is remarkable, and we appreciate the opportunity to engage in thoughtful discussion (and sometimes debate) about these art forms we all love so much.
After reading our previous discussion and then listening to today’s SOTD, I was curious to learn more about her. I’m now following her on Twitter, where I was happy to learn that she’s a mask-wearing, Biden/Harris supporting Christian living in Nashville. While she may have been “pissed off” when she wrote the previous song, she appears to be pious in the way a public figure such as Stephen Colbert or Pete Buttigieg is… where their religion is a source of comfort and a call to love and protect, not divide and repress. I would imagine faith is particularly challenging for those who find themselves far more socially and politically aligned with those who do not share it than those who loudly profess it while acting in ways that undercut the values you hold most dear.
