Song of the Day #4,586: ‘Avalanche’ – Heather Nova

This is the second time Heather Nova has appeared on the blog, and the first in 10 1/2 years.

Nova is a Bermudian singer-songwriter who spent most of her childhood living on a sailboat in the waters of the Caribbean. That has nothing to do with this song, but it’s a pretty interesting fact. She has been releasing albums for 27 years now, including her latest — Pearl — just two years ago.

I discovered Nova through her 1998 album, Siren, but didn’t follow her career after that. This is the first time I’ve considered her since that post in July, 2010.

The most memorable part of that Song of the Day was commenter Amy’s strong response: “I find this sort of eerie, Kate Bushesque singing to be something I can stand very little of. I’m barely getting through the song; can’t imagine listening to a whole album of this sort of stuff.”

I lie in a field, in the trailer-park of my dreams
Saving up for someday
But what does someday mean?
And I’m young but I let it slip on by
I’m co-dependent and I’m not in side
And you, you look like freedom
You look like the avalanche I need
The avalanche I need

And there’s a road, leads away from here
And every day I stand in place and watch it disappear
And there’s a bird, circles in my mind
Security’s the whore in me that never lets me fly
And you, you look like freedom
And you,you look like change
You look like the avalanche I need
The avalanche I need

With your sunburned soul
And your hunger for the road
I’m snowblind and I’m crying after
Like nothing else matters
When you go down take me
When you go down, yah, make me
I got a hunger you could feed

And I know it’s a fine line divides
The place I’m looking for and what’s inside
And I know it’s a long, long way
Through the outskirts of everyday
And you, you look like freedom, you look like change
You look like the avalanche I need
The avalanche I need
Avalanche

  1. Amy says:

Hmmm… her voice on this track seems wholly unremarkable. Maybe she’s mellowed? Or I have? 😜

  2. Dana Gallup says:

Amy’s comment was more memorable than my comedy routine? Harumph!

  3. Peg says:

Just read your comedy routine for the first time Dana. Very funny 👏
