I’m going to keep the countdown momentum going for one more week, this time tackling the new Lana Del Rey album, titled Norman Fucking Rockwell.
I’ve been anticipating this album for a year, since the first two singles were released last summer. Since then, Del Rey has trickled out several more tracks, building anticipation, before finally dropping the album a few weeks ago.
Like Taylor Swift’s Lover, Norman Fucking Rockwell was produced by Jack Antonoff, who also shares co-writing credit on several tracks. While you can often hear Antonoff’s stamp on a track, here he is very much in service of Del Rey’s distinctive sound.
NFW is Del Rey’s fifth studio album (not counting her mysterious debut, which was pulled from shelves mere months after its release) and possibly her best, though every one of her albums is excellent. The record is receiving glowing reviews, many of which reflect back on the absurd sexist backlash Del Rey fell victim to after an awkward 2012 Saturday Night Live appearance.
Now critics know that she is the real deal, a singer-songwriter with a unique sound and sensibility whose music sounds gloriously out of step with the current pop scene. I’m glad she is finally getting the attention she deserves.
This week, I will rank the 14 songs on NFW from “worst” to best, but I have to say up front that every single song on this album is great. It doesn’t have a weak moment. And as of late September, it is easily my favorite album of the year.
14. ‘Doin Time‘ – This cover of Sublime’s modest 1997 hit earns the bottom spot because it’s the only track on the album not written by Del Rey. That said, it’s a great listen, simultaneously faithful to the original and very much a Lana Del Rey song.
13. ‘Cinnamon Girl’ – The vibe of this track reminds me very much of Sarah McLachlan’s classic 1993 album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, and I was surprised to find that nobody else had made that connection. The song features one of Del Rey’s damaged protagonists, who repeats the sad line “if you hold me without hurting me you’ll be the first who ever did.”
12. ‘Fuck it I love you’ – Del Rey is quite fond of the f-word on this album. She is also obsessed with California. This song serves up an ample helping of both.
I like to see everything in neon
Drink lime green, stay up ’til dawn
Maybe the way that I’m living is killing me
I like to light up the stage with a song
Do shit to keep me turned on
But one day I woke up like
“Maybe I’ll do it differently”
[Pre-Chorus]
So I moved to California‚ but it’s just a state of mind
It turns out everywhere you go‚ you take yourself‚ that’s not a lie
Wish that you would hold me or just say that you were mine
It’s killing me slowly
[Chorus]
Dream a little dream of me
Make me into something sweet
Turn the radio on, dancing to a pop song
Fuck it, I love you
Fuck it‚ I love you
Fuck it, I love you
I really do
[Verse 2]
I used to shoot up my veins in neon
And shit’s even brighter; you’re gone
So many things I would say to you
I want you
[Pre-Chorus]
You moved to California, but it’s just a state of mind
And you know everyone adores you
You can’t feel it and you’re tired
Baby‚ wish that you would hold me or just say that you were mine
But it’s killing me slowly
[Chorus]
Dream a little dream of me
Turn this into something sweet
Turn the radio on, dancing to a pop song
Fuck it, I love you
Fuck it, I love you
Fuck it, I love you
I really do
[Bridge]
It turns out California’s more than just a state of mind
I met you on the boulevard, wind through my hair, you blew my mind
And if I wasn’t so fucked up, I think I’d fuck you all the time
(I really do)
It’s killing me slowly
[Chorus]
Fuck it, I love you (I moved to California, but it’s just a state of mind)
Fuck it, I love you (It turns out everywhere you go, you take yourself, that’s not a lie)
Fuck it, I love you (Wish that you would hold me or just say that you were mine)
I really do (It’s killing me slowly)
[Outro]
(Fuck it, I love you)
California dreamin’, got my money on my mind
(Fuck it, I love you)
Chances in my veins, running out of time
(Fuck it, I love you)
California dreamin’, got my money on my mind
(I really do)
Chances in my veins, running out of time
(Fuck it, I love you)
California dreamin’, got my money on my mind
(Fuck it, I love you)
Chances in my veins, running out of time
(Fuck it, I love you)
California dreamin’, got my money on my mind
(I really do)
Chances in my veins, running out of time
Glad this long anticipated album lived up to your expectations.
